Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI)
Summary The Supervisory DRT (MR) position is assigned to the James A Haley VA Healthcare System, Imaging Service, Magnetic Resonance Imaging section within the James A Haley VA Medical Center, Tampa, FL. The Supervisor leads team members in varying assignments including special MRI examinations and procedures within the Magnetic Resonance section, with and without the use of contrast materials, 100% of the time, and is accountable to the Chief Technologist. Responsibilities Supervisors carry out the assigned tasks independently and assume full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the MRI program at a medical center or independent outpatient clinic that does not meet the level of complexity described at the GS-12 level for a Chief radiologic technologist and has significant supervisor responsibility for staff. This is a general medical and surgical facility, classified as a Level 1A facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and limited research. In addition to the main facility in Tampa, there are services offered in several community-based outpatient clinics. The Supervisory DRT must possess skills to interview and evaluate candidates for positions in the section, as well as recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions. The Supervisory DRT will have the ability to evaluate performance, identify continuing education and training needs, as well as analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems that result in developing and implementing solutions that result in efficient section operation. The Supervisor must be registered in MRI. 1) The Supervisor must have knowledge of clinical performance measures and be able to assist the QA/QM Technologist and the Compliance Officer in clinical process improvements, as well as knowledge in computers, printers, VistA, PACs, transmission and the planning of additional hardware and software. Must have knowledge of and assume responsibility for formulating and administering policies and procedures. 2) The Supervisory DRT assumes the responsibility for the day-to-day service operation, supervision, and administration of the MRI section in the Diagnostic Imaging Service, identifying areas requiring attention and recommending course of action to the Chief Technologist. 3) The Supervisory DRT is responsible for indoctrination and training of new professional staff members assigned to the service with respect to VA procedures and policies. 4) The Supervisory DRT is responsible for policy and procedural interpretations of guidelines of Radiology Service, James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, and VA; and is responsible for reviewing new or proposed regulations for impact on programs before implementation. 5) The Supervisory DRT is responsible for developing short and long-range plans, conducting systematic reviews. 6) The Supervisory DRT can be delegated to act in the absence of the Chief Technologist. 7) The Supervisory DRT is responsible to ensure the professional credential compliance of DRT's performing procedures and examinations. The Supervisory DRT functions as the supervisor for all technologists assigned to the MRI section of the Imaging Department within JAHVA Medical Center. The Supervisor will direct and assist daily to assure optimum patient care, quality control, and the economically efficient performance of all activities. Preferred experience: 3 Years Leadership Experience in an MRI leadership position in a major medical facility. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Grade Determinations: GS-11 Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as section supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff. The incumbent evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The incumbent develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section. The incumbent is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. The incumbent directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: i. Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. ii. Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage section workload, quality, performance, and productivity. iii. Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution. iv. Ability to supervise technologists performing a wide variety of difficult radiographic exams (CT, MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, Ultrasound). v. Ability to interview and evaluate candidates for positions, evaluate subordinate performance, recommend appointments, advancements, or recommend or take appropriate disciplinary actions. vi. Skill in participating in organizational facility initiatives, workgroups, and/or committees.
