Supplemental Instruction - Academic Support Leader

Supplemental Instruction is an academic support service targeting historically challenging courses, in which SI Leaders coordinate peer-assisted sessions to develop greater understanding of course material and gain a greater grasp of the course itself. SI attempts to integrate the “what to learn” with the “how to learn”, emphasizing study skills and model student behavior as well as course content. These sessions are not remedial; rather, they enhance the material that is covered in traditional classroom meetings.

Requirements include:

1.        SI leaders will attend all course meetings and model good student behavior (by taking notes, reading material, etc). (20%)
2.        SI leaders will be responsible for creating content for 2-3 out of class sessions per week (totaling 3 hours) that review course material and show application of various learning strategies and may hold extra sessions in preparation for exam time. (25%)
3.        SI leaders will be responsible for coordinating aforementioned sessions and communicating those to the classes that they cover. (15%)
4.        SI leaders will have office hours (totaling 3 hours per week) where students can ask questions and where leaders can plan for SI sessions. (20%)
5.        SI leaders will have biweekly meetings with the SI supervisor to go over different study strategies, train, and review how sessions are going. (5%)
6.        SI leaders will have biweekly meetings with professors to review major topics to cover and provide feedback about students’ difficulties.  (5%)
7.        SI leaders will create occasional video content for their respective discipline. (5%)
8.        SI leaders will collect data for evaluating the SI program. (5%)
