Below is an overview of their typical roles, responsibilities, and scope of work in a manufacturing supply chain operation
Responsibilities Packaging Design and Developmento Develop packaging solutions for components, sub-assemblies, and finished goods.
o Ensure packaging meets product protection requirements, ergonomic standards, and compliance with regulations (e.g., hazmat or environmental laws).
o Optimize designs for cost, weight, space utilization, and ease of handling.Container Management
o Design and implement reusable and returnable container systems to reduce waste and improve cost efficiency.
o Standardize container types across supply chain operations to simplify logistics and reduce complexity.
o Collaborate with vendors to source containers that meet specifications.Supply Chain Optimization
o Assess and optimize packaging and container designs to improve transportation efficiency (e.g., maximizing cube utilization).
o Minimize packaging waste while maintaining product integrity.
o Conduct time studies or simulations to improve material flow and handling within production and warehouse operations.Cross-Functional Collaboration
o Work with procurement, suppliers, logistics, and production teams to align packaging requirements with supply chain objectives.
o Collaborate with production engineers to ensure packaging supports manufacturing efficiency.
o Coordinate with quality teams to test and validate packaging for compliance and durability.Sustainability Initiatives
o Drive initiatives to use recyclable or biodegradable materials to align with corporate sustainability goals.
o Reduce the environmental footprint of packaging by optimizing material usage and implementing reusable systems.Technical Documentation and Standards
o Develop and maintain packaging specifications, standards, and drawings.
o Document best practices for packaging and containerization.
o Ensure adherence to industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISTA, ISO 11607).Problem-Solving and Continuous Improvement
o Troubleshoot packaging and container-related issues in the supply chain.
o Conduct root cause analyses to address product damage or inefficiencies.
o Implement corrective actions and track improvements.Cost Management
o Analyze the cost implications of packaging materials and container systems.
o Negotiate with suppliers to reduce costs without compromising quality.
o Monitor and optimize packaging spend across the supply chain. Minimum Requirements
