JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for the assigned section of the Laboratory (Chemistry/Serology, Blood Bank, Microbiology/Urinalysis, Hematology/Coagulation, Point of Care) ensuring that all the policies and procedures are up to date and within CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission standards including the proficiency and competency testing of all staff with any deficiencies/outliers responded to within a timely fashion. This position would require the individual to review all quality control data for their area to ensure accuracy and within the established parameters. Responsible for ensuring that all analyzers in their area are well maintained within the recommended manufacturer/CAP guidelines, troubleshooting problems and that any issues which could adversely affect patient results are responded to and addressed immediately. This position will assist in evaluating and implementing new methods, instrumentation, and new methodologies in coordination with the Laboratory Director and/or Medical Director. The Section Coordinator is also responsible for ensuring that the technologists in their areas have all the tools needed to provide accurate, quality results which includes but is not limited to, inventory of supplies, controls, reagents, calibrations and materials, quality control including lot to lot testing, and training. This individual will be responsible for operating LIS system including requisition, interface, result entry, reporting, and ability to be competent in all areas of the laboratory.
Patient Care: Shows a commitment to provide the highest level of patient care.
Collects, labels, and prepares specimens for testing. Maintains required documentation for all lab procedures. Processes requisitions for testing. Prepares and distributes reports.Safety: Adheres to all workplace and trade safety laws, regulations, standards, and practices.
Performs quality control testing to assure accuracy of patient testing. Performs equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Practices safety policies to maintain a safe working environment. Performs all duties to satisfy regulations in preparation for inspections.Teamwork: Cooperates within a team to achieve goals and deliverables.
Provides information and consultation to requestors. Recognizes interdependencies with other areas and supports other staff as needed. Shares and initiates regular and professional communication with co-workers. Participates in regular staff meetings.Technical Competence: Uses knowledge that is acquired through training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job.
Performs competency and proficiency testing to assure maintenance of skills. Completes educational activities to continually improve skills and assists consultants. Participates in improvement of methods and processes.The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree from regionally accredited college university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program within the last five years. OR MLT (ASCP) certification and a bachelor’s degree form a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours(24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, and two years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and urinalysis/body fluids in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last four years. OR Bachelor’s degree form a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, and five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and urinalysis/body fluids in the U.S., Canada or accredited laboratory within the last ten years. OR An associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a college/university accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, and successful completion of a NAACLS or ABHES accredited MLT program within the last five years. An associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, including 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry and 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology, and CLA (ASCP) certification. An associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, including 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry and 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology, and successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course within the last ten years. An associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, including 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry and 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology, and three years full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and urinalysis/body fluids in the U.S., or an accredited laboratory within the last ten years.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Possess thorough knowledge and understanding of principles and concepts of medical laboratory science. Possess good analytical skill. Skilled in laboratory techniques. Good working knowledge of laboratory analyzers. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with healthcare workers and patients. Must be able to work as a \"team player\" with other technologists, phlebotomists, medical staff, nursing staff, other hospital employees.
