Surgery Tech Plains, MT Full Time Surgery Mid Level Summary Surgical technologists, also called “surgical techs, scrubs or operating room technicians,” assist in surgeries under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists and circulating nurses. Before an operation, surgical technologist help prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. They assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment and ensure the equipment is working properly. They transport patients to the operating room; help position them on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical drapes. Technologists also assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves. During surgery, technologists pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants. They may hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments. Surgical technologists help prepare, care for and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis, and assist in applying dressings. Surgical technologists operate decontamination equipment, sterilizers, lights or suction machines, and assist with diagnostic equipment. Surgical technologists may help transfer patients to the recovery room following surgery and clean and restock the operating room. Surgical technologists are responsible for the sterile processing of instruments and equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. + Assists with the setup and clean- up of the operating room. + Scrub for surgeries and assist surgeon. + Cares for surgical instruments. + Autoclaving of surgical, obstetrical, ER, and clinic instruments. + Stock, clean, sterilize, store and dispense and ordering of supplies. + Responsible for small equipment maintenance. + Responsible for maintaining preference cards for all surgeons.  + Assists with patient transport and positioning as directed. + Follows all standards that are applicable to AORN and AAMI. + Adheres to recognized infection control standards. + Professionally conveys clinical information to other team members. + Must be able to perform SPD duties QUALIFICATIONS  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must have attended Sterile Processing Schooling.  The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
