Surgical Clean Core Tech 1 -- Operating Room -- General Hospital

Job Summary

Clean, process, and sterilize instrumentation needed on an emergency basis. Maintain proper inventory levels in operating rooms.

 

Responsibilities

• Monitor steam sterilizers. This includes running, reading, and recording results of daily biological indicators, quarterly reports to Infection Control, weekly cleaning of sterilizers, and minimal trouble-shooting of sterilizers. • Deliver supplies to operating rooms from Central Service during procedures. • Stock supplies for individual operating rooms. • Flash sterilizing instruments needed during a procedure which have become contaminated. • Collaborate with Central Service on missing instruments on trays. • Act as a resource person for nurses needing items while procedure is in progress. • Maintain competency in aseptic technique. Assist with operating room change overs. • Monitor Steris unit. Check solutions and change as needed. Clean scopes between cases and process in Steris unit and appropriate washers. • Responsible for calling Central Service for next case cart and placing case cart in correct operating room. • Monitors QI logs for sterilizing/cleaning equipment. • Responsible for checking sterility dates and inventory of specialty items remaining in surgery suite. • Check expiration date and disinfection level of OPA. Record information. • Clean specialty instruments prior to sending to Central Service. • Perform work in accordance with all departmental pay practices and scheduling policies, including but not limited to, overtime, various shift work, and on-call situations. • Orders pharmacy supplies and noncontrolled medications for stock under the supervision of a clinical nurse.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist. Education 

• Formalized Training (Required) Experience: None Comments: Trains and prepares to achieve Central Service Tech Certification. The test cannot be taken until after 12 months of employment, at which time the incumbent will be promoted to a Surgical Clean Core Tech II. The Central Service Tech Certification must be obtained within 12 months of the date which the incumbent becomes eligible to sit for the exam.
