Job Description:

Participates as a surgical team member in the preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon's preferences with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies. Provides direct assistance to surgeons during procedures by positioning the patient to give the best exposure, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.

Job Details

1. Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate methods, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.

2. Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.

3. Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems.

4. Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument count according to hospital policy and procedure.

5. Works collaboratively with other surgical team members to maintain/update physician preference cards.

6. Works collaboratively with team members to support cost containment processes and initiatives.

7. Promotes mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health, and abides by service behavior standards.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

9. May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need.

10. May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.

Education

Required:  Graduate of an accredited Surgical First Assistant Program

Preferred: Bachelor of Science in related discipline

Certification

Required:

Current certification as a Surgical First Assistant (SFA)

NCCT Surgical Technologist certification (TS-C) or NBSTSA certification is required.

Registered in state of practice as a Surgical Technologist is required.

Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) course completion card from the American Heart Association is required.

Preferred:

AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

1+ year OR scrubbing experience is preferred.

1+ years of First Surgical Assistant experience is preferred.
