Surgical Pathology Procurement Technicians receive training and instruction in surgical pathology and tissue procurement, such as processing, describing, dissecting small tissue specimens and preparing frozen section slides for rapid diagnosis. Surgical Pathology Procurement Technicians also accession and perform data entry of patient and specimen information, perform general lab functions, and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies and records. **A caregiver in this position will work 10:00am - 6:30pm, carry an on-call pager one week per month, and work one to two holidays per year.** A caregiver who excels in this role will: + Identify, measure, weigh and describe tissue specimens. + Process special tissue studies per protocol. + Prepare frozen sections for rapid diagnosis and specimens for processing. + Receive specimens, assign accession numbers, and distribute and perform patient and specimen data entry. + Complete quality assurance documentation for requisition, specimen and processing problems. + Ensure that billing is performed in a timely manner. + Perform radiographs of gross specimens and develop film. + Receive training and instruction in gross specimen photography. + De-calcify mineralized specimens and prepare for storage. + Transport and process specimens and maintain records. + Direct and prioritize the activities of Tissue Procurement Technicians as they relate to diagnostic requirements, regulatory guidelines (HIPAA, OSHA, JCAHO, CAP, IRB) and external tissue procurement contracts (CHTN, COG, SWOG). + Assist with instruction regarding surgical pathology procurement techniques and procedures. + Perform general lab functions as needed and follow laboratory procedures. + Function as a primary liaison with Clinical Trial Research Coordinators. + Review the operating room schedule and consented patient lists to identify all potential tissue for procurement for clinical trials and other research activities. + Pick-up and deliver specimens to surgical pathology. + Dissect tissue for clinical trials and other research. + Embed tissue for sectioning, cut sections using a cryostat, and collect shavings for extraction of nucleic acids and proteins, stains and cover-slips tissue sections. + Enter data on tissue procured into Research Tissue Procurement App. and CoPath. + Maintain records of services performed. + Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and maintain the work area. + Resolve technical and procurement problems. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: + Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science from a four-year college or university OR a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university AND education and training equivalent to high complexity testing personnel per CLIA. Diploma and/or transcripts must be provided, and education will be verified. + Knowledge of anatomy and physiology sufficient to identify, dissect and describe tissue specimens. + Good judgement to evaluate biopsy specimens and select protocols. + Knowledge of medical terminology specific to anatomic pathology.
