Job Summary

The Surgical Specialties Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Manager is responsible for the direct managerial oversight of a clinical advanced practice provider (APP) team to include Physician Assistants (PA) and Nurse Practitioners (NP) for assigned surgical specialties within the Department of Surgery. These Services include Adult Plastic, Vascular, Thoracic, Maxillofacial, as well as the adult/pediatric Transplant team.  Oversees operations of the teams including clinical practice, staffing, staff development, strategic planning, quality assurance, and administration of activities and personnel that span inpatient and outpatient clinical operations. Develops, implements, and monitors patient care and revenue-generating departmental programs for APP teams while committing to work in their designated department/service regularly as a staff provider. The APP manager will foster a positive work environment for APPs and ensure a high-quality of service provided to patients, while exemplifying the Michigan Medicine values of caring, innovation, inclusion, integrity and teamwork. 

Note: This is a 40-hour position and may include off shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the service.  This position will provide leadership to APPs within Neurosciences service line with potential for expansion of role to include other APP teams as determined by needs of the APP structure and determined by APP Directors.

Responsible for operational and tactical planning, contributing to strategic plans, implementing and assessing techniques to promote and improve the quality, safety, and continuity of patient care. Ensure financial integrity and planning for area of responsibility by regularly reviewing billing practices and monitoring metrics such as reimbursement, productivity, and utilization. Ensure APP compliance with institutional policies and procedures and adherence to federal and state regulations at the local level. Partner with local physician leadership to optimize models of care resulting in top of license function. Facilitate and promote open channels of communication between APPs and department/section leadership including attending faculty, house officers, and interdisciplinary staff. Support the coordination of APP recruitment, orientation, onboarding, and scheduling of clinical coverage. Manage the performance of all APPs in area of responsibility by conducting formal performance evaluations, including providing coaching and mentoring opportunities, developing improvement plans, and coordinating disciplinary processes as needed. This includes distribution and collection of feedback from interdisciplinary teams which may include faculty, residents, and peers.  Organize, promote, and direct continuing education and staff development programs to encourage continued learning and professional growth. Attend continuing education offerings and staff development programs, review literature, and collaborate with other professionals. Act as central oversight for CE/CME policy including review and approval of CE/CME related expenses consistent with the policy within the department/section. Assist with the development of clinically relevant peer review and quality metrics.  May assist with individual chart reviews as required for ongoing professional evaluation. Advise with the development of a focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE) in collaboration with local physician leadership. Identify opportunities and facilitate experiences for APP students within service line or team, as applicable.

This position is a 50% clinical and 50% administrative appointment. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The APP Manager will have dual reporting to the relevant service line APP Directors and the designated physician leader for administrative purposes. When on clinical duty, the APP Manager will collaborate with the assigned physician. 

SUPERVISION EXCERCISED: Administrative supervision is exercised over APPs within the assigned areas. For concerns related to nursing practice, the APP Manager will also consult with the appropriate NP Director. For concerns related to PA practice, the APP Manager will also consult with the appropriate PA Director.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients. Required Qualifications*

Physician Assistant Candidate:

Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan. Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA or one of its predecessor agencies.  Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA). State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required   Current DEA registration required BLS required (ACLS may be required dependent on delineation of additional privileges not included in core privileges) Five years APP clinical experience in specialty relevant to practice area.  1 year formal leadership experience or 2 years progressive leadership experience in leading teams, work units, departments

Nurse Practitioner Candidate:

Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan. Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Nurse Practitioner.  Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Current DEA registration required. BLS required (ACLS may be required dependent on delineation of additional privileges not included in core privileges) Five years APP clinical experience in specialty relevant to practice area.  1 year formal leadership experience or 2 years progressive leadership experience in leading teams, work units, departments.

Able to collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and to provide visionary direction for team members. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and all members of the health care team. Demonstrated ability to initiate and effectively lead a change management process using continuous improvement frameworks.

Background Screening
