Responsibilities The surgical technologist collaborates with other team members of the healthcare delivery team, including physicians, to deliver quality, safe, and efficient health care. The surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique, in combination with knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation tools and technologies, to facilitate the physician’s performance of surgical procedures. The surgical technologist is responsible for creating and maintaining a sterile environment, proper handling and care of surgical instruments and equipment, and passing those instruments to the surgeon and/or assistant for use during surgery. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Garnet Health System provides a compensation range to comply with the New York State law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits. When determining a team member’s compensation and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget and internal equity). Qualifications Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) OR an Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES)-accredited Surgical Technology Program OR military surgical technology program. Completion of fifteen (15) hours of continuing education on an annual basis is required to remain qualified to practice as a surgical technologist. Minimum Experience: 1-3 years of experience as a surgical technologist in a hospital or other healthcare setting is preferred. New graduates will be considered. Required Certification/Registration: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology, Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) is required. Current and active BLS is required Physical Requirements: Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Working Conditions: Environmental Demands and Exposure to Hazards: Works in a clean, well- lighted, heated or ventilated facility. No routine exposure to hazards. Physical Demands: Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks. Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger and hand dexterity to operate computer and office equipment. Can withstand long periods of sitting, standing and/or constant walking. Ability to lift 10 lbs. Mental Demands: Ability to foster collaborative relationships, to work well under pressure, to organize and synthesize new information, and prioritize tasks. Possesses critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility. Ability to multi-task. Required detailed attention to work in an environment where interruptions cannot be controlled. Demonstrates sensitivity to customer needs and expectations. May be subject to irregular hours including evenings or potentially weekends to participate in operational and community events as necessary. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. May be exposed to unpleasant odors. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations.
