Surgical Technologist/CST - Physician Practice
I. SUMMARY OF POSITION PURPOSE Ensures patients and patient care areas are prepared for examinations and procedures, assists providers with all aspects of direct patient care with training and demonstrated competency as well as other tasks involved in patient care, such as messages, referrals and scanning. II. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES + Greets incoming patients in a friendly and professional manner. Performs initial work up (vital signs, chief complaint, updating medication list, etc.) and enters information into the EMR. Prepares patient for complete examination or office procedure with appropriate dress and ensures all necessary supplies are available. Promotes patient’s physical and psychological comfort. Recognizes and reports to provider any variation of symptoms or changes in patient’s condition. Ensures all patients care areas and equipment is clean and well stocked. + Assists provider with patient care as needed within scope of practice: office procedures, diagnostic testing, chaperones, specimen collection, simple wound care, etc. Assists within scope of competency, following all approved protocols, guidelines, and procedures. Have knowledge and skill in the use of emergency equipment, medications and resuscitative measures. + Obtains information from patient phone calls and EHR messages and forwards to provider for course of action or if and when patient should be seen, relaying urgency to provider if needed. Relays information back to patient, including test results as directed by the provider. Documents all actions taken into patient’s electronic chart for provider review and sign of + Arranges/schedules referrals, procedures, tests or surgery as needed. Tracks and maintains referral work queues as needed and tracks outstanding orders. Assists with obtaining pre-certification and corresponds with insurance companies as needed. As needed and within onsite training, provides clerical support including answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, scanning, etc. III. EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS + Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or military equivalent. + Maintains the Surgical Technologist Certification administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. + Annually completes 15 hours of continuing education. + Minimum of two (2) years clinical experience preferred.
