What is the Opportunity?
As part of an alliance agreement Aecon Nuclear has been awarded a contract with Ontario Power Generation to support the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). Beginning in 2023 Aecon started supporting the validation phase design, procurement, early site preparation and site mobilization scope for the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
Reporting to the responsible Survey Assembly Manager, this role will support survey execution and success within the DNNP Balance of Plant overall construction scope which includes construction of the building structure, the Water overall Intake and Outtake, Tunnel, Switchyard Utilities, Offices, Warehouse, road, and underground services. During the validation phase the Superintendent will assist in the construction planning and reviews. In execution they will be responsible for the supervision, coordination and scheduling of survey and inspection activities for multiple scopes of work in compliance with the contract and the job cost estimate and ensures all the work is completed safely to acceptable standards of quality and workmanship.
What You'll Do Here:
Accountable for survey planning and readiness on the Balance of Plant construction including methods of survey, manpower levels, materials, tools & equipment, rentals, and work schedules. Develop and monitor project survey readiness plans for heavy civil excavations, shoring, piling, monitoring and other site establishment scopes. Direct co-ordination of other civil survey resources such as subsurface utility investigations, boundary surveys, UAV missions, Bathymetric surveys. Direct and review completion of layout calculations, models and other digital survey data requirements. Provides input and approve safety plans and procedures for survey and inspection tasks as required. Responsible for the implementation and enforcement of safety, quality, and human performance programs. Ensures that Aecon policies and project procedures are being adhered to and followed by survey personnel. Assume responsibility for productivity of direct hire trade labour and subcontractors, efficient use of materials and tools & equipment and contractual performance of the project. Understanding and support of applicable trade agreements. Application of home company discipline policies and appropriate escalation of performance concerns to home company manager. Ensure survey personnel complete all necessary training in areas of safety, quality assurance, technical qualifications, equipment operation and owner specified requirements. Review and provide support in the creation of survey quality, progress, or as built documentation. Ensure project survey is carried out in compliance with drawings, specifications, tolerances and project schedule and budget. Interface with client representatives, design engineers, consultants, other contractors, etc. Ensure project is constructed in accordance with QA Programs and project quality plans. Perform regular field tours to check survey progress and meet with project site personnel. Carry out site safety inspections. Participate in company-wide initiatives aimed at overall continuous improvement. Review and approve timesheets, expense reports, vacation requests, and training requests, within Limits of Authority. Responsible for performance management of all direct-report employees, including coaching/mentoring, assistance with career planning and training, preparation of yearly and mid-year performance reviews. Ensure all project staff and direct reports understand and comply with applicable code of conduct policies (Aecon and customer policy). Other duties as required or assigned.
What You Bring to the Table:
Minimum of 10 years Civil Survey Supervision and planning experience. 2 years nuclear or Industrial construction experience is an asset. Knowledge of all aspects of Civil Survey such as: Grading and Infrastructure design, piling and shoring systems, TBMs and Tunneling, Survey Optical and GNSS equipment and grade control systems. Experienced in leading Civil survey staff in reporting of project controls and quality deliverables. Must understand how to support a positive Nuclear Safety Culture. Experience in managing major complex Nuclear or Industrial projects. Ability to read and understand construction plans, sections and profiles, and specifications. Must have a full appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry.
