SVM - Demonstrator, Small Animal Clinic St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Demonstrator position, in the Small Animal Clinic in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/1/2025. Job description Objective The faculty of St George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for postgraduate training in the Veterinary profession while being inspired to develop compassion, curiosity, tolerance and a commitment to animals and society, a dedication to life-long learning and an understanding of the vital role of research in Veterinary Medicine. Instructional Activities: Teach clinical skills labs/rotations in following courses/disciplines: + Introduction to Clinical Rotations (SAMS 528) + Introduction to Clinical Practice (SAMS 526) + Clinical Skills Labs + Professional Development Skills + Clinical Communication Skills Labs Participate in clinical and academic teaching services offered by the SAC including oversight and supervision of students on companion animal medicine rotations/labs, surgery rotations/labs, Emergency and critical rotations/labs, management of hospitalized cases, outpatient procedures, physical exam labs, perform routine and emergency surgeries and procedures, and daily cage side rounds, student clubs lectures and labs. Instruction of students in all aspects of general practice and emergency and critical care, clinical teaching of third year veterinary students. Supervise, train and mentor all technicians and assistants. Deliver presentations and wet labs to student clubs. Supplemental teaching Deliver presentation in the following disciplines: + Clinical mentorship, supervision, and training of junior faculty. + Clinical mentorship and supervision of technicians and assistants. Essential Functions + Providing direct animal care in a clinical environment + Treating/monitoring critically ill and emergent patients + Assisting with training of students in technical procedures, animal care and handling + Providing clinical assistance to faculty + Preparing animals for medical/surgical procedures + Administering therapeutic medicines/treatments as prescribed by veterinary staff + Setting up appropriate and instruments + Preparing and labeling specimens + Maintaining and stocking treatment areas + Preparing and submitting charges for services rendered + Work with a diverse group of clinicians, technicians and support staff + Assisting with research projects + Expected to assist clinicians in delivering clinical courses offered by the Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Department including but not limited to physical exam laboratories and rotations in medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, and shelter medicine. + Actively participate in faculty activities, which include membership of various Committees. + Performing venipuncture and catheterization (intravenous and urinary) as requested byclinicians. + Performing patient treatments including routine wellness care, husbandry, physical therapy and grooming. + Performing drug calculation/medical math and administer medications (oral and injectable) to pets in accordance with Government regulations and clinician’s orders. + Performing routine laboratory analysis, including hematology, serology, blood chemistry, urinalysis, fecal floatation and skin scrapings. + Assisting clinicians in surgery by preparing surgical patients, administering medications, fluids and anesthetics and monitoring anesthesia. + Applying wound dressings and preparing fluid therapy as directed by a clinician. + Maintaining SAC diagnostic equipment and arrange assistance if needed from manufacturers or technicians. + Preparing patient prescriptions as directed by a clinician. + Providing patient care and nursing to hospitalized patients. + Supervising student care and treatment of animals. + Preparing and send out referral diagnostic lab tests. + Attending internal and external training workshop and seminars. + Monitoring the adherence to the company’s core values. + Contributing to collaborative research projects between SGU and affiliate schools. + To actively participate in faculty activities, which include membership of various Committees. + Expected to perform any other duties as assigned by the SAC Medical Director. Faculty Senate + Departmental Reviews (as required). + Faculty Meetings (as required). + Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean). + Administrative roles, as assigned by the Chair of the Department and the Dean. + Outreach efforts in the local community. + Be available to work all year round, except for a 30 days vacation period. + Complete any other job related assignments that he or she may be given time to time by the Director, Small Animal Clinic or his designee. Research and Scholarly Activities: + Actively engage in a research topic in a relevant area. + Support student research and learning through supervision and mentoring of selected students. + Contribute to curriculum review and innovation. + Practice continuous quality improvement of the courses and content delivered by the department. + Active participation in scientific/educational conferences and Continued Education. + Contribute to the academic advisory system for all students enrolled on the DVM program. Qualifications + Bachelor of science degree from a certified veterinary technology program or + Bachelor of Science in a related field with a recognized veterinary technician degree (CVT, LVT, RVT or equivalent) + 5 years of experience in a progressive small animal veterinary hospital or clinic. Desirable Qualities + A strong knowledge base of companion animal medicine, surgery and emergency and critical care medicine will be an asset. + Excellent oral and written communication skills. + A commitment to the education of veterinary professionals. + Ability to work on a rotational basis, including but not limited to overnights and weekends.
