Position Summary / Career Interest:The phlebotomist collects blood, and other samples, from patients for analysis. Assists Laboratory personnel and Medical Staff in obtaining blood specimens from hospital inpatients, outpatients, Emergency Care patients and Nursing Home patients. Also to assist Laboratory personnel with general laboratory functions. Phlebotomist is at risk of exposure to blood born diseases, universal precautions required.

Responsibilities and Essential Job FunctionsReviews Phlebotomy procedures and guidelines annually or when unsure of procedure and does not deviate from them. Understands priority levels, STAT, ASAP, TS, RT and ADD. Uses PPID Device for proper identification of patients (only using positive patient ID override on series patients). Also uses OMC's two patient identifiers (Patients First and Last Name, Date of Birth) with the PPID Device and during system down time. Using PPID Device promptly documents pertinent information such as line draw, total volumes, comments, etc, saves collection data and Sync's data before sending or bringing specimens to the Laboratory." Professionally greets patient, introduces self, explains the procedure to be performed. Gaines the patient's confidence by washing hands, gloving and being organized. If needed reassures patient and tries to relive any apprehension he or she may feel. Accurately performs venipunctures, blood cultures, fingersticks, heelsticks, line draws, following OMC Laboratory Procedures. Follows order of draw ensuring proper specimens are collected for required testing, performs any special specimen handling, while ensuring patient and employee safety." Always present in patient room with nurse, performs positive patient identification, ensures all fluids are stopped for 1 min, adequate waste is drawn and discarded, appropriate amount is drawn and transferred into required tubes for testing ordered/if Holdex device is used provides nurse with waste tube and required tubes for testing ordered. Always in full view of the patient. Promptly and accurately labels specimens with appropriate bar code labels or legibly hand labels with patient First and Last Name, Date of Birth, Collection Date and Time and Collectors Initials, marking specimen tubes with appropriate priority color and if applicable records Blood Bank Alpha/Numeric number. Efficiently and accurately monitors Specimen Collection Inquiry performing add test orders, canceling, crediting duplicate test, logging in specimens or when patient need drawn. Delivers specimens to proper departments, centrifuges specimens, promptly answerers tube system, orders out/nursing home/reference patient labs, answers telephones/communicates well in assisting callers with laboratory questions and problems solves. Understands Cerner functions required to work accurately and efficiently in the C.R.A. (Collection List, Specimen Log In, Order Result Viewer, Container Inquiry, Department Order Entry, Requisition Order Entry, ABN, Modify Collections, Request A Chart, Manual Expedite)" Assists in the training of new employees, JCCO students, radiology tech, ECC techs. Stocks phlebotomy supplies. Maintains the cleanliness of the C.R.A., drawing room, collection trays, carts and checks for expired equipment. Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
