Perform individual switching, flagging, coupling, uncoupling, brake setting

Maintain constant watch over assigned area and equipment, checking continually for operating hazards, malfunctioning or defective equipment, track and track obstructions

Plan the movement of rail cars, giving directions to the locomotive operator

Set track switches properly, set out railcars and pick up rail cars, accordingly

Judge braking and stopping distances in order to give proper radio signals to the locomotive operator for adequate stopping

Must be continually aware of motorists, pedestrians and mobile equipment and crane operations in the work area and provide point protection in the direction of the train movement

Identify the various types of railcars, give consideration to whether or not they are loaded or empty to estimate stopping distance

Responsible for the daily railcar movement within the facility

Work with other crew members to safely spot railcars at requested locations

Receive and follow oral and written instructions from management indicating which cars are to be switched

Review with supervision and locomotive operator of switching orders and which cars are to be moved to specified locations of the yard, using radio, verbal or hand signals

Maintain records, number, origin, destination and cargo of cars switched.  Document add / remove seals

Raise coupling lever to couple or uncouple cars, align railcar draw heads to ensure coupling is possible

Throw track switches to facilitate shunting of cars and signal locomotive operator to move cars using radio or arm signals

Assist with loading and unloading process

Open gate and hopper hatches

Identify product inventory

May be required to perform other duties as trained when not assigned to rail operations

Must be able to read and comprehend all Standard Operating Procedures, safety rules, procedures and safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, etc., in English

Must be able to complete all required checklists

Must be able to effectively communicate instructions, directions, processes, procedures, etc., in English

Must be able to stay focused and maintain constant awareness of surroundings

Must be able to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations

Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision

May be asked to perform occasional pushing, reaching and overhead work

May be asked to perform occasional tasks that involve lifting

Climb ladder up to hand brake platform to turn handbrake wheel to set car brakes

May be required to walk alongside cars to inspect couplings, air hoses, etc.

May be required to perform tasks that include climbing

May be required to perform work requiring stooping and bending

May be required to perform routine walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending and squatting and negotiating uneven surfaces

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

Position Description
