Systems Administrator (Hybrid)

Job Description:

Summary:

The Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining, supporting, and optimizing the organization’s server infrastructure and related network components. This role supports the reliability, security, and performance of enterprise systems, including Windows Server environment and backup solutions.

The individual in this position will primarily focus on Windows server administration, virtualization platforms, system backups, and troubleshooting, as well as integrating the on-premises infrastructure with the growing cloud environment.

This position is based out of Barr’s Minneapolis, Minnesota, office with regular travel to Barr’s co-location facility in the metro area. Occasional travel may be required to other Barr office locations across the US and Canada. 

Responsibilities:

Maintain and support on-premises Windows server infrastructure, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and authentication systems

Manage and troubleshoot virtualized environments (currently VMware)

Perform regular server monitoring, patching, updates, and security hardening

Administer backup solutions, ensuring data integrity, regular testing, and disaster recovery readiness

Provide escalation support for server-related issues, ensuring timely resolution

Assist with network-related tasks, including basic troubleshooting of routers, switches, and firewalls as needed

Implement IT security best practices, including access controls, system logging, and vulnerability remediation

Maintain documentation for server configurations, policies, and troubleshooting procedures

Evaluate and recommend system updates or optimizations to improve server performance and security

Collaborate with vendors for hardware and software maintenance, licensing, and support

Provide guidance and training to other IT support staff as needed 

Minimum Qualifications:

Post-high school training in computer support, networking, or a related field

Three years of IT experience, with at least two years in Windows server administration

Experience with Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, and authentication services

Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, or similar platforms

Experience managing system backups and recovery solutions

Working knowledge of networking concepts, security best practices, and system monitoring tools

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, particularly with on-premises Windows infrastructure

Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Ability to occasionally travel to Barr's offices across the US and in Canada

Ability to be available for off hours maintenance tasks and occasional emergency response outside of normal business hours

Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr now, or in the future

Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information technology, or a related field

Industry certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Windows Server, Azure Administrator, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), VMware Certified Professional (VCP), or similar

Familiarity with automation, scripting (e.g., PowerShell) for system management and administration

Knowledge of security frameworks, compliance standards, and best practices. 

A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.   

Compensation: 

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $75,000–$89,000/year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a “no retained earnings” model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.
