Position Description\:

The Systems Engineer will provide Systems Engineering (SE), systems requirements management, and Verification, Validation, and Accreditation (VV&A) support to the MSFC Integrated Avionics Test Facility (IATF) in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) Program. IATF spans across the Systems Engineering, Software Development, and the Avionics and Software Test Facility Branches under the Flight and Ground Software and Simulation Division (ES50). The selected candidate will have knowledge of complex systems engineering life cycle end-to-end development, ranging from requirements development, functional design, hardware integration, and requirements verification. 

This is a mid-level position. Activities associated with this position include but are not limited to the following\:

Support the Systems Engineering Lead in evaluating stakeholder needs, characterizing technical VV&A objectives, and utilizing system engineering practices to solve stakeholder issues. Develop and maintain detailed verification objectives and verification success criterion for NASA IATF requirements. Support coordination of planning and activities required for requirement verification, software accreditation, facility certification, and system validation of hardware in the loop (HWIL) facilities. Plan and manage verification activities required to verify compliance with IATF requirements during development, integration, testing and evaluation. Support development of IATF requirements and verification products to define the design of multiple IATF products utilizing a common requirements baseline. Coordinate technical interchange meetings between NASA and prime contractor teams to achieve IATF HWIL Verification, Validation, & Accreditation (VV&A). Perform systems engineering tasks and assessments following NASA and MSFC standards to support the SLS. Program through reviews, meetings, working groups, trade studies and development of key systems engineering products to support program milestones. Communicate technical issues, risks, best practices and lessons-learned related to products, technical positions, requirement management, and verification and validation (V&V) practices. Develop integrated schedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage systems engineering tasks. *

Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum 5 years of experience; MS with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

The following skills/experience are required\:

Experience with high-fidelity, real-time distributed system simulations in a mixed Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) and software simulation environment. Extensive knowledge of systems and software engineering best practices with a demonstrated proficiency in requirements verification, validation, and software simulation accreditation.
Experience with systems engineering collaboration and requirements management applications such as DOORS or DOORS Next Generation.
Working knowledge of Agile Software Development processes and Collaboration Tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Stash, GitHub.
Ability to perform hands-on integration and troubleshooting support, including proficiency with basic lab hardware and software diagnostic tools.
Ability to analyze test results.   Perform detail analysis to close Detailed Verification Objectives.
Ability to work as part of a team and as an individual contributor.
Experience developing and delivering executive level briefings, negotiation skills demonstrated through technical problem solving, and demonstrated ability to breakdown problems or issues into manageable pieces.
Extensive knowledge of HWIL systems, electrical hardware design, and software systems.
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office 365 Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams).
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.
Self-motivated, effective team player, familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.
Familiarity with NASA and MSFC standards is desired.

Work Environment\: 

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%).

Physical Requirements\: 

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%).  Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (<10%).  

Equipment and Machines\: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance\: 

Normal workday is from 7\:30 a.m. through 4\:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions\: 

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
