T&D Section Manager - UGSC (Kansas City)

This position is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the Cables Department within the Transmission Distribution (TD) Global Practice in Kansas City. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by senior management:

Leadership

Establish and communicate clear and concise expectations and accountability measures for the staff within the Cables Department.Continuously advocate for the Cables Department staff to TD and Burns McDonnell leadership.Prioritize the needs of the Cables Department team members and quickly follow up on any outstanding items.Strive to offer the Cables Department team the maximum amount of transparency in your processes, procedures and decision making.Make concerted efforts to be accessible and approachable to the Cables Department staff.

Culture

Lead the Cables Department team with a focus on creating an atmosphere and environment for all, while consciously combating real and perceived favoritism within the department.Actively foster a culture based on our MacCulture principles, quality, diversity and inclusion, and team cohesion and camaraderie.Drive a culture focused on safety and compliance with company and client safety policies.Develop and foster an innovative culture that promotes critical thinking skills and utilizes tools, technology, and processes to drive continuous improvement and efficiency.Interpret policies and establish procedures and strategic goals for the section in collaboration with business line management.

Career Development and Performance Management

Meet with the Cables Department team on a regular basis. Listen to their short- and long-term goals, and provide guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.Annually Organize, lead and conduct the annual performance appraisal process for Cables Department staff.Continuously educate the Cables Department staff about the various career paths offered within TD, and work with the team to develop the knowledge, skills, abilities, and opportunities to pursue their desired career path.Identify training needs and develop training programs in collaboration with technical teams, Technical Manager, and business line leadership.Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement.

Collaboration Communication

Identify the most effective means to communicate with the Cables Department, and to each of the individual contributors within the section and proactively share information.Coordinate and collaborate with business line leadership to build cohesion and tie the needs of our people to the needs of our business.Communicate and coordinate regularly with Cables Department leadership in all of the TD global practice regarding staffing, clients, pursuits, initiatives, and overall business line strategy.

Recruiting and Onboarding

Develop and maintain an annual personnel growth strategy that directly ties to the Cables Department business plan and chargeability goals.Proactively work with the HR Recruiting team to identify and recruit candidates that align with our MacCulture principles and the Cables Department’s growth strategy.Purposefully interview, assess and hire prospective candidates utilizing processes and procedures that increase overall equity within the hiring process.Lead, manage and deploy the onboarding process for all new staff transitioning into the Cables Department. This includes but is not limited to interns, new graduates, experienced hires, transfers and converted contract employees.

Resource Management

Regularly review team utilization of staff to make sure employees have a clear path of development and support and are adequately leveraged and empowered to their strengths and skillsets.Oversee and manage the chargeability of the Cables Department.

Cables Design Duties

Properly apply industry and client standards for the design of underground and submarine cable systems, including civil design, and cable system design.Create material and installation specifications for:Civil project components such as duct banks, splice vaults, backfill materials, excavation, etc.Electrical project components such as MV and HV cable, Cable accessories, Cable installation, and testing and commissioning requirements.Create design calculations, including cable ampacity calculations, cable pulling calculations, sheath voltage limiter sizing, and voltage drop calculations.
