This senior advisor will be regularly exposed to senior operational and corporate management and be able to present and execute on recommendations.

Do you possess a strong understanding of US sales, use and fuel tax laws at the Federal and State levels? Do you also possess a strong understanding of Canadian sales tax and volumetric taxes? Do have experience with sales and fuel tax system engines?

Suncor’s trading business is growing and with that comes new challenging tax opportunities. We are seeking a trusted business advisor to provide timely, effective and pragmatic indirect tax advice pertaining to Suncor’s supply, trading, optimization and marketing activities. Your technical knowledge of commodity taxes applicable to the physical trading of crude and refined products will be critical to achieve the growth and goals of Suncor’s trading business.

This posting may be used to identify candidates for other positions within the indirect tax team that will support Suncor’s supply, trading, optimization and trading activities.

Minimum Requirements:

A relevant business degree and/or a professional accreditation such as a CPA or LLB (Bachelor of Laws). Candidates with a combination of relevant education and relevant work experience may also be considered.At least five years of relevant experience in the indirect tax department of a large corporation with U.S. and Canadian operations, a major accounting firm or law firm.Hands on indirect tax experience (U.S. and Canadian) particularly in compliance, technical advisory and audit controversy.Ability to think strategically, attuned to market, economic and business trends; with a balanced perspective of stakeholders and formulating balanced, risk-conscious decisions.An ability to learn different types of indirect taxes and tax laws of different jurisdictions applicable to commodity trading as well as a good understanding of systems and software for the appropriate implementation of strategies.Experience with tax engine software including Avalara and One Source.SAP systems experience from an indirect tax compliance perspective.

Responsibilities:

Act as technical resource regarding indirect taxes with a focus on fuel tax and sales taxes, including both U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions.   Interact extensively with Suncor’s trading business as a member of Suncor’s commodity tax team.Collaborate with the functions supporting the Supply, Trading and Optimization (ST&O) organization to understand the broader impacts of transaction structuring within and outside of Finance.Keep abreast of new tax legislation, administrative positions, case law, etc. that will impact Suncor and advise in the development of Suncor’s position as it relates to trading activities and collaborate with the broader commodity tax team to support the commodity tax compliance function.Provide audit controversy support as required.Provide indirect tax compliance support as required with a focus on ST&O business initiatives.Provide indirect tax project support and leadership for indirect tax group and ST&O business initiatives.  Provide non-supervisory leadership as a technical advisor when required.

This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needsOur business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
