BayPointe Hospital opened its doors in 2002 as a free-standing psychiatric hospital serving the Mobile community and specializing in children’s inpatient care. It is located in West Mobile on a beautiful 15-acre campus. BayPointe Hospital offers short-term stabilization in an inpatient setting and long-term treatment in a residential setting for children and adolescents, in addition to day treatment programs.

West Mobile Academy is a classroom and day treatment program, housed at BayPointe Hospital, developed to meet the educational and therapeutic needs of severely emotionally disturbed students 6 to 18 years of age who are unable to maintain appropriate behaviors in a Mobile County Public School setting.  A child/adolescent must manifest a combination of at least three criteria whose severity could prevent treatment in a less restrictive environment.  West Mobile Academy also offers an 8 to 10 week day-treatment program during the summer months without an educational component.

Responsibilities

Communicates with local Public Schools for consumers being admitted into BayPointe Hospital

Instructs students individually and in group settings in accordance with identified needsWrites and makes available daily/weekly plans so that other staff can provide appropriate instructions to students when the teacher is absentProvides hand off communication to Educational Liaison regarding student needs to support positive adjustment by the student following discharge from the facility.Completes an educational discharge summary and progress report at time of discharge. This summary will be provided to the Educational Liaison at the time of discharge or no later than 11 am the following day.Consults with local school faculty to obtain/provide student information as needed for consumersAdministers assessment to determine student’s present level of performance in reading and math to acute care consumers upon admission, in order to provide work on their accurate grade performance level. Provides consumers with daily work obtained from consumers’ respective schools or from on-site resources; ensures that all work and/or grades are provided to the Educational Liaison upon consumer’s discharge, or no later than 11 am the following day. Provides daily documentation of consumer’s attendance and classroom participation and ensures that students sign in the classroom sign in log daily. Provides consult to school personnel regarding student needs through conferences, phone contacts, and/or in writing as needed to support positive adjustment by the student following discharge from the facilityDocuments classroom participation and progress daily in the electronic medical recordCompletes other duties as assigned.

Carries out administrative duties in accordance with established schedules and procedures

Informs supervisor of any needed classroom supplies in a timely manner in order to ensure that classroom is adequately stocked with needed materials at all time.Notifies Educational Liaison daily of work received and/or continued needNotifies supervisor and Facilitator of Academics of failure to obtain school work from the zoned school within 48 hours of intakeMaintains an effective professional relationship with all program staff as well as with all external contacts made during the course of fulfilling job related dutiesAppropriately delegates routine task to behavioral staff to assist with classroom needs.Ensures that supervisory personnel are adequately informed regarding classroom operations

Bachelor’s degree in education; Alabama teacher’s certification in secondary education preferred.

SPED K-6 preferred 

 

Knowledge in child/adolescent specialty, outlined below, to be attained within (6) months of employment.

Knowledge of psychiatric disorders in child and adolescent populationsKnowledge of cultural diversityKnowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention and interventions common to acute psychotic consumers, as well as, non-violent crisis intervention practicesKnowledge of Psychiatric Rehabilitation principlesKnowledge of educational methods with children and adolescents with severe and persistent psychiatric disorders, as well as, behavior problems

 

Physical Requirements of the Job: 

Frequent standing, sitting, and walking which are in bursts of 5 to 10 minutes, there are times when this can be extended to pacing with the consumer (time could be undetermined) and at times sitting and standing can be extended with the employee having the ability to change positions as permitted by the observance and behavior of the consumer at that timeOccasional forward bending from the hips while kneeling to reach to the sideOccasional need to be able to assume a full squat/lunge from a standing positionOccasional need to maintain back extension while being on stomach with one’s own body weight on hips and legs, this position is maintained for several minutesOccasionally, be able to put one’s own body weight on one knee and one elbow on the same side of one’s bodyOccasionally, be able to kneel and reach to same side toward the floor.Lift up to 10 pounds occasionally during shiftStrong grasp is needed to use keys to open doors throughout the facility, and to maintain constant contact with a consumer during a restraint procedure or with other hold techniquesPushing/pulling force up to 25 pounds occasionally during a shift
