General Duties:
Erie 1 BOCES seeks a Personal Teacher Aide for our Northtowns Academy for our growing school community. Kind and caring individuals are encouraged to apply. These positions require working with a student with disabilities one on one under the direction of the classroom teacher. Applicants should have a positive outlook, a strong work ethic and be compassionate.
+ Assists with classroom activities as directed by the teacher.
+ Works with individual children as directed by a teacher.
+ Assists children with arrival and departure involving coats, boots, and lunches.
+ Helps keep supplies and materials in order.
+ Helps prepare materials for their use.
+ Cleans up and puts away materials after use.
+ Changes children's clothing and cleanses children, if necessary.
+ Assists the teacher in implementing the classroom and/or individual student's behavior management program.
+ Accompanies a child when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the child must go to another part of the building.
+ Assists in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.
+ Assists and supervises games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.
+ Assists the teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, toileting, and other activities of daily living(e.g. grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).
+ Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.
+ Teacher Aides working with non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40- pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.
+ SPECIAL NOTE: The ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teacher aides who work with non-ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Teacher aides should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices.
+ Be an active part of the classroom education team, as demonstrated by following teacher directions, being cooperative, showing support for other team members and focusing on student needs and outcomes.
+ Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.
+ Maintains confidentiality of student information.
Job Qualifications
Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:
A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or;
B) Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved, not necessarily in an aide role; or;
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
