Position Availability: Immediately Position Title: Teaching Assistant, Illustration Senior Thesis Requisition Number: 0406073486 Location New York City Position Type: Student Department: PSD/Illustration Responsibilities: The Illustration Senior Thesis TA position covers the Friday class sessions from 4:00 to 6:40 PM. Your responsibilities will depend on the section and faculty to which you are assigned, but you will primarily assist students with their writing: thesis proposals and statements, bios, and any written aspects of their projects (e.g., children’s books, graphic novels, scripts for animation). Additionally, you will provide feedback on their projects beyond the writing component.

Each section has two co-teachers who are both present on Fridays, and the maximum number of students per section is 15. Once you are assigned to a section, the co-teachers will explain what is expected of you. There may be instances where your engagement is asynchronous, such as working with students through Canvas Assignments or Discussion Threads, Zoom, shared Docs, email, etc., rather than in the classroom. However, you will not be expected (or allowed) to exceed your contracted hours. Tuesday class meetings are designated for required lectures, peer group sessions, and similar activities, and they are not attended by the TAs. There is a possibility to continue as a TA for the spring semester (Senior Thesis 2), which is encouraged for continuity.

Senior Thesis Syllabus Course Description:Illustration Senior Thesis 1 is the first semester of a two-part course in which students create a long-term project through research and experimentation. Students will propose and develop a body of work that explores a specific idea. Classes will consist of working sessions, assessment, brainstorming, and feedback on the work. This course will also feature guest speakers, alumni panels, peer reviews, a senior show, and open studios.
Thesis Projects:Throughout the Fall and Spring semesters you will work on your Thesis Projects. The goal of Senior Thesis is for each student to develop a body of work that expresses their unique voice in the medium or media of their choice. Students should think of their Thesis Project as an investigation into a subject or a question of deep personal interest. This investigation can take the form of a visual book, an animation, a series of narrative paintings, a three-dimensional installation or any other forms they’ve studied in the Illustration Program. In the process of developing this body of work, students will hone their technical skills, conceptual rigor, and creative problem-solving abilities. Thesis Project is meant to be shared with an audience of readers/viewers, so clarity of intent and presentation is crucial. Students will work closely with the Senior Thesis faculty to define the goals of their investigation to arrive at a plan that is both ambitious and realistic.Through synchronous and asynchronous instruction and research, and individual and group critiques, students will pursue individual approaches to the realization of their Thesis Project. Guest lectures will supplement independent student research to situate their work in the context of today’s world: both within the landscape of illustration and in a larger social, political, and cultural framework. Students will also spend time thinking about how they’ll embark on their career with the body of work they’ve developed. Alumni and other guests will present their experience of entering and working in the field and students will have the opportunity to ask these guests questions about their path, process, and the field.Each thesis class section will have two faculty, providing students with two different perspectives. Additionally, you will be given opportunities to get feedback on your work from the Thesis faculty of other sections.

Hourly Rate: $44.20
Minimum Qualifications: Second-year Creative Writing students with any concentration (Arts Writing, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Writing for Children, or Young Adults).
