Job Description The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) is seeking an outstanding Technical & Policy Director to drive technical leadership, influence global policy, and enhance the Institute’s impact within the marine sector. This is a rare opportunity for a senior industry professional to lead on technical strategy, engage with global stakeholders, and represent IMarEST at the highest levels, including at the UN and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
As Technical & Policy Director, you will provide strategic and technical leadership, ensuring that IMarEST remains at the forefront of marine innovation, regulatory developments, and thought leadership. You will be responsible for:
Driving technical excellence by leading the Institute’s technical strategy and maintaining a forward-looking ‘Hot Topics’ Register to stay ahead of industry trends. Shaping global policy, preparing consultation responses, and representing IMarEST at high-profile international meetings. Supporting members and technical boards, including the Technical Leadership Board (TLB), Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and the Publications Supervisory Board. Enhancing the Institute’s learned society role, identifying new training and education opportunities, and contributing to technical publications such as the Journal of Operational Oceanography and Journal of Marine Engineering and Technology. Overseeing IMarEST’s presence in intergovernmental organisations, ensuring strategic participation at key forums including IMO and IPCC. Strengthening industry collaboration, proactively engaging with stakeholders in academia, government, and the private sector to expand IMarEST’s influence. Managing budgets for technical activities, ensuring financial sustainability while delivering impactful initiatives. The ideal candidate will be a highly respected maritime professional with a passion for innovation and technical excellence. Key attributes include:
Extensive knowledge of the marine industry, including technical, regulatory, and policy developments. A proven track record in managing high-performing technical teams and delivering strategic initiatives. Exceptional communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with senior figures in industry, academia, and government. Familiarity with technical publications and industry events to drive thought leadership. A strategic mindset, with experience in shaping policy and influencing decision-makers at the highest levels. A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to work across complex and multidisciplinary environments. A commitment to excellence, with a drive to advance the marine sector and make a lasting impact.
The role will involve some international travel and occasional work outside standard hours to accommodate key industry events and meetings.
