Job Summary:
The Technical Manager reports to the Advanced Materials Technology (AMT) group that provides manufacturing support to multiple facilities in North America (~15). This individual will lead a diverse group of engineers that enable the reliable and safe operation of some of Cat’s most unique casting and heat treat equipment (100,000 ton/yr). This individual will also lead the team of engineers providing worldwide supplier assessment and development support as related to casting, forging, heat treat, and steel technologies.
What You Will Do:
The Technical Manager will have close interaction with local facility, operations, and EHS managers to proactively manage equipment reliability and other optimization efforts to optimize key performance indicators (KPI’s.). This individual will provide the leadership related to reactive based technical support required to maintain order fulfillment metrics of Caterpillars unique and proprietary heat treat complexes (>45+). The support is heavily relied upon by the factory maintenance teams for advanced troubleshooting, repair guidelines, and equipment modernization strategies. This individual will also manage executive communications regarding equipment modernization and capacity expansion.
Detail functions
Responsible for the justification of capital investments that includes; capacity analysis, financial justifications (DCF), design, safety, scheduling, and equipment validationProvides expertise and resources to design, procure, and validate large-scale capital improvements throughout furnace and other equipment lifecycles ($2-5M annually)Leading and prioritize budget/efforts of diverse team (15+) of support engineers, controls, chemical, electrical, maintenance, mechanical, metallurgical, and softwareLeadership of supplier assessment program as related to casting, forging, and heat treaters Worldwide (>300 suppliers annually).Responsible for the team/software used to control assembly, casting, and heat treat processes (35,000 active recipes)Direct maintenance and calibration of the Caterpillars proprietary furnace atmosphere control systemsProvides equipment up-time and reliability analysis and improvement strategies for operations partnersLeading Cat’s effort to expand digital footprint by developing/maintaining architecture to monitor critical systems (>51,000 data streams)Responsible for completion of environmental and safety verifications of all equipment combustion and other related safety systems (FM/NFPA 70 & 86)Provides mechanical design of quench machines, tooling, and auxiliary systems as required for NCI and NPI programsLead team of experts that perform advanced troubleshooting and change-control for all heat treat automation and control system (24X7). Manage the creation and support of equipment startup and emergency shutdown proceduresEducation Requirement:
BS Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or other Engineering discipline combined with referenced skills

Top Candidates will also have
• 10 years’ experience with Caterpillar Proprietary Carburizing Processes
• Demonstrated success with leading cross-functional teams (electrical, inspection, mechanical, metallurgical, and software)
• Knowledge of atmosphere control systems, verification methods, trend analysis, and advanced troubleshooting skills
• Experience with large New Capital Introduction (NCI) process (>$2M)
• Understanding of industry safety requirements (NFPA 70 & 86)
• Strong planning, problem solving skills, and prioritization skills
• Advanced skills with interpretation of metallurgical test results (ex: microstructural characterization, carbon depth, case-depth, and other)
• Mechanical and spatial visualization experience as related to HT dimensional control methodologies (ex: Gleason press quench and tooling technology)
• MS Materials Science, Metallurgical, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering
• Certified DMAIC Black Belt
• Operations background
• Experience managing diverse team of engineers

The location for this position is East Peoria, IL.
Domestic relocation assistance is not available for this position.
This position may require up to 25% travel (domestic and international; travel to Pontiac 3-4 times a month, and up to 4 times a year internationally- MX)

Summary Pay Range:
$156,000.00 - $234,000.00Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
