Position Title: Technical Lab Supervisor - Microbiology

Position Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of assigned department/shift. Responsible for coordinating competency in testing and assures testing meets the accreditation requirements from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), CLIA, and JCAHO. Coordinates inventory, reviewing of quality control values, and maintenance records. Serves as a consultant to others regarding accrediting agency compliance for department. Serves as a leader in the processes to train trainers, maintain, or change department instruments and processes. Responsible for coaching, counseling, evaluation of Technologists that work within the department.

What the Technical Lab Supervisor - Microbiology will need:

Bachelor's Degree in medical technology with clinical internship.ASCP Certification3 years healthcare/hospital lab experienceExperience in coordinating people in the performance of testing and be able to troubleshoot instruments or testing devices.Preferred: One to three year(s) experience of overseeing staff.

What the Technical Lab Supervisor - Microbiology will do:

Supervises and coordinates the day-to-day activities in the department, within parameters delegated by the Lab Manager, to assure quality test results are delivered to providers.Coordinates the day to day department testing within the hospital.Ensures that staff follow proper procedures to maintain patient safety.Consults with nursing to investigate and follow up on patient safety issues.Oversees department training to deliver the best possible training to operators.Assures an adequate inventory of all reagents, quality control, and supplies.Collaborates with the Lab Manager to develop, write, revise and implement departmental policies, procedures and protocols.Communicates and collaborates with staff, management, various departments within Mercy and outside professionals such as customers, representatives and community physicians. Interviews vendor representatives for product availability and information.Interviews and recommends candidates for hiring. Completes evaluations and recommends merit increases relating to subordinate performance. Makes recommendations regarding wages, and/or terminations of subordinates. Performs first line coaching, counseling, and discipline of those working in department.Collaborates with the Lab Manager for ongoing program development, budget, activities and functions, such as procurement, inventory control, instrument upgrades and site layout.Collaborates with the Lab Manager to assure efficient departmental operation by controlling and evaluating allocated financial resources and improving productivity and quality. Assists with budget development.
