Technical Publications Manager

Cleaver Brooks is looking for a Technical Publications Manager to join our team in Milwaukee, WI. The Technical Publications Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, creation, and maintenance of technical documentation for products within the Cleaver-Brooks portfolio of boiler plant equipment and thermal solutions. This role involves ensuring the production of clear, accurate, and customer-friendly manuals, guides, and other technical content. The manager will work closely with product development, engineering, product management, and customer support teams to deliver high-quality, user-centric documentation that aligns with industry standards and company objectives.

Job Location: Milwaukee, WI

Essential functions:

Leadership and Management: Develop, collaborate and manage internal/external technical writers, editors, and content developers. Assign tasks, set priorities, and manage the workload of the assigned team to meet project deadlines. Documentation Strategy and Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive technical publications strategy, ensuring alignment with product lifecycle and company goals. Work closely with product management, engineering, and quality assurance teams to understand product specifications and user needs. Create documentation roadmaps and schedules for product releases. Content Creation and Review: Oversee the creation of clear, concise, and accurate technical content, including user manuals, installation guides, service manuals, technical bulletins, and online help systems. Ensure consistency and quality of documentation by enforcing style guides and adhering to documentation standards. Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather technical information and validate content accuracy. Manage the review and approval process for all documentation. Process Improvement: Continuously assess and improve internal documentation processes to increase efficiency and output quality. Implement best practices for content reuse, version control, and content management systems. Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies to enhance documentation workflows and collaboration. Cross-Department Collaboration: Act as a liaison between the technical publications team and other departments (engineering, product development, product management, customer support, etc.). Ensure that product changes, updates, and new features are communicated effectively across teams to inform documentation updates. Collaborate with customer support and training teams to address common technical issues and improve documentation. Customer-Centric Approach: Ensure that documentation is written with the customer in mind, focusing on clarity, usability, and accessibility. Incorporate user feedback into documentation improvements. Ensure compliance with accessibility standards for all documentation, especially digital formats. Compliance and Standards: Ensure all technical documentation adheres to industry regulations, standards (e.g., ASME, UL, CSD-1), and OEM-specific guidelines. Maintain a high level of accuracy and ensure that documents are up-to-date with the latest product changes and regulatory requirements. Performance Metrics and Reporting: Track the performance and impact of technical documentation through feedback, usability studies, and internal audits. Provide regular reports to senior management regarding team progress, resource needs, and potential improvements. Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Account Management 

Basic Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, English, or related field. Master’s degree is a plus.

Experience: 

5+ years of experience in technical publications, with at least 2-3 years in a managerial or leadership role. Experience in an OEM environment, preferably in [industry type, e.g., boilers, automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, etc.]. Strong knowledge of content management systems (CMS), document control systems, and publishing tools. Familiarity with product development lifecycles, including Agile methodologies, is a plus.

Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading abilities with a keen eye for detail. Ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams and manage multiple projects concurrently. Strong project management skills, including experience with project management tools. Excellent verbal, written and oral communication skills. An entrepreneurial aptitude with an ability to thrive in a fast-paced, creative, performance-driven environment that is focused on stretch goals and tied to metrics. Proven ability to quickly learn new applications, processes, and procedures. Must be able and willing to collaborate in a team/cooperative environment as well as exercise independent judgment and initiative. Ability to set and change priorities amongst multiple competing constituencies and project ambiguities. Must possess a ‘can do attitude’. Ability to be a self-starter, take initiative, and perform quality work with minimal supervision Highly resourceful, possess an intellectual curiosity, a desire to investigate, and will take initiative to explore available sources of information to acquire the necessary data.

Travel Requirements:

<5% travel within North America to support product development locations.
