Position Overview
We seek a proactive, detail-oriented person with exceptional technical writing, editing, research, and organizational abilities. This person will work with technical subject matter experts (SMEs), such as software engineers, product managers/owners, quality assurance engineers, and other documentation staff to research, learn about, and document Trimble Transportation’s suite of software applications. Additionally, this role will involve fully owning, managing, and maintaining both internal and external knowledge bases for the software product.
Our ideal candidate is a person who can write about highly technical subjects for various audiences and maintain a library of both internal and external documentation. You must have the skills and experience to produce, edit, and maintain these types of materials:
Online help for .NET applications, mobile and web applications, and/or API integrations
Installation guides
User guides
Internal software implementation documentation
Software FAQs
Knowledge management structure
Position AccountabilitiesWork with SMEs at all levels of the organization and across multiple teams and departments to collect information that is relevant to end-users or internal implementers for their successful configuration and operation of Trimble’s software products.
Learn the use cases for the software and how to navigate/use the software enough to be able to write effective user documentation.
Use team templates and documentation style guidelines effectively to develop documentation that has a consistent visual and structural approach.
Organize and present content in a manner that meets the needs of the intended audiences.
Comply with quality standards for well-organized, clear, accurate, and complete end-user documentation.
Manage, maintain, and organize both internal and external knowledge bases for the software product.
Ensure documentation is easy to consume and accessible to all readers.
Efficiently and effectively store and access large amounts of legacy documentation.
Meet all publication deadlines.
Required Competencies
Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills
5+ years’ experience developing end-user documentation, training materials, and/or technical documentation
Experience using graphic editors, such as Microsoft Paint or SnagIt/SnagIt Editor, for editing and augmenting screenshots
Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communications, Computer Science, or equivalent work experience
Independent and proactive worker with strong time management, research, and problem-solving capabilities
Highly motivated to learn and understand complex software
Ability to explain technical details and complex use cases clearly and concisely for basic end users
Experience in formatting and publishing documentation that is easy to consume and accessible to all readers
Highly organized and able to own, organize, and maintain a knowledge management system
Attention to detail and ability to create polished, professional materials
Ability to work well as part of multiple teams simultaneously and learn multiple software applications, how they work together, and various integrations
Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, schedule and meet deadlines, and take initiative to accomplish tasks with minimal supervision in complex situations
Fluency in Windows OS systems
PreferencesWe are especially interested in candidates with one or more of the following:
Background in the transportation industry
Background in knowledge management and/or training
Familiarity with any of the following:
Scaled Agile development environments, especially as part of a shared services team
API and SDK documentation
Atlassian products, specifically JIRA, Confluence, and Bitbucket
Specific development tools that we use to create online help following the docs-as-code model: Visual Studio Code, AsciiDoc, Antora
Basic Microsoft SQL skills/SQL Server Reporting Service (SSRS)
HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, or similar web programming languages/tools
Style guides, especially the Microsoft Style Guide
