Teen Summer Program Facilitator-Climate Justice
Statement of Duties: As the Youth Services Division continues to develop cohort-based summer jobs programming for teens, there is a need for support staff to facilitate and lead groups of teen employees. The employee will be responsible for overseeing a cohort of teens, facilitating team building and experiential learning programming for youth participants.   Essential Functions: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. + Lead a group of 10 teen participants in the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program + Facilitate team building and professional development workshops for groups of teens + Ensure timesheet accuracy and other administrative tasks related to youth supervision + Conduct regular check-ins and debriefs with youth participants, individually and in groups + Coordinate logistics for all job placements with representatives from various city departments + Create and maintain a work environment that ensures physical safety and wellbeing for all participants + Proactively learns and adapts plans and materials for each session that they lead and/or coordinate + Lead and participate in outdoor activities with teens + Provides positive youth mentorship for all youth participants Recommended Minimum Qualifications:  Education and Experience: High School Diploma required; strongly preferred for applicants to be in enrolled in a college or university majoring in education, child/youth development, or human services. Minimum of one to three (1-3) years of experience in youth services, education, or community outreach; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Knowledge, Abilities and Skill: Knowledge: + Has been trained and demonstrates an understanding of youth development and educational best practices. + Has a working understanding of Climate Justice: the science and impacts of climate change in Somerville, and how climate change can be addressed locally in a way that equitably serves all members of the community. Ability: + Ability to collaborate intentionally with various partners and colleagues from city departments. + Works autonomously and creatively to anticipate and address challenges. + Has enthusiasm for creating space for youth-led dialogue. + Ability to execute time management and prioritize tasks. Skill: + Has experience facilitating educational workshops for groups of approximately 10 teens. + Has experience and working understanding of best practices for youth employment and development programs. + Ability to execute time management and prioritize tasks. + Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and facilitation. Work Environment: Little or no physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. Teen Facilitator should be comfortable running activities outside during the summer weather. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as ledger books, photocopy and computer paper.  Physical and Mental Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. Work requires some agility such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as office equipment or photocopy paper (up to 30lbs.). Motor Skills Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone, personal computer and/or most other office equipment including word processing, filing and sorting of papers. Visual Skills Visual demands require constantly reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
