McCain Foods (Canada) – Florenceville Prepared Foods facility is currently looking for a TEMP-Microbiology Technician for a 13-month Maternity Leave. This position will be responsible for the microbiological analysis of finished products, in-process products, ingredients and environmental samples as per the McCain Foods (Canada) Microbiological Procedures and Specification manuals, as well as the plant specific procedures. The microbiology technician supports all functions in the microbiology laboratory, and requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices.
Job Description
The Microbiology technician shall be responsible for:
Performing routine microbiological analysis according to established regional procedures, including:Preparation of media and chemicals,Sample collection,Sample analysis,Enumeration of colonies and interpretation of resultsMaintain accurate records of all testing performed in written and electronic formats, SAP and other relevant software Comparison of results to specifications in FRM/CrystalWorking with viable cultures in a safe manner to prevent cross-contamination of samples, lab environment, or personnel Accurately preparing, maintaining and communicating micro results, reports and trends to the Quality manager, and other team members as required, and in a timely manner Communicating test results not within specification to the Quality manager and other required contacts in a timely manner, and completing deviation reportingFollowing all lab safety requirements, including those outlined within the JHA, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP’S), and Good Manufacturing Practices Maintaining accurate records of laboratory supplies, including sample collection, to ensure adequate quantities are available for testing requiredMaintaining a sanitary working environment to promote cleanliness and completion of assigned housekeeping tasksMaintaining general housekeeping of the laboratory equipment and environmentPerform and document routine maintenance of lab equipment to ensure proper operationEnsuring all calibration, validation and monitoring of laboratory equipment, instruments and media are completed.Trials and studies to establish new monitoring and testing protocols under the direction of the Quality manager and/or corporate Microbiologist.Performing proficiency testing on a regular basis and maintaining passing results as proof of proficiencyImplementing corrective actions resulting from proficiency testing results, laboratory audits, or any other requirements.Accompanying inspector(s) and complete sampling, as assignedParticipating in disposition of held product, as requiredAttending training as requiredPerforming additional job duties as assigned
The Microbiology Technician’s responsibilities shall be performed in a safe, accurate and efficient manner while respecting health and safety rules. This position requires the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends.
Qualifications
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related scientific discipline, diploma or certificate in Food Science, Lab Sciences or equivalent education / experience. This includes 1-2 years’ work experience in a microbiology laboratoryPreferred: Food manufacturing environment work experience Technical Competence: Knowledge and application of microbiology testing techniques and analytical procedures. Strong understanding of math and scienceSkills
Computer literate with experience with Microsoft Office and Office 365Strong verbal and written communication skills, strong problem solving and decision-making skills.Excellent organizational and time management skills, basic knowledge of HACCP, GMP and Good Laboratory Practices and procedures.Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including management, customers and colleagues. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.Strong ability to work independently and with others in a team environmentAbility to analyze data and draw logical conclusions with minimal guidance, and utilize problem-solving techniques for issues involving several variablesMust have a valid driver’s license, and a reliable mode of transportationApplicants must possess a good safety record and continually demonstrate “safety first.” Selection of employees for promotion is based upon such factors as ability, special training, experience, prior PEP Ratings, attendance, ability to meet the physical demands of the position, education, length of service, and involvement in additional assignments. Length of service will be the determining factor when all other factors are relatively equal. Testing may be required depending on the position applied for. Interviews will held as necessary and those selected for interview are determined based on meeting the criteria as noted above. An evaluation period will be used to determine the candidate’s suitability to the position. Shifts are subject to change and are not guaranteed due to scheduling demands.
