Summary: The Temporary IRIS GIS technician, on behalf of the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYS AGM), will maintain and modify Agricultural (Ag) Districts boundary data for public distribution. Using data provided by county agencies participating in the Ag Districts program, the GIS technician will create and update Ag District boundaries in a variety of file formats to be published through the Cornell Library CUGIR website, as well as the NYS AGM and NYS GIS Clearinghouse website links.

Responsibilities:

Data Maintenance and Updating:

Establish and maintain Ag District Mapping Program digital boundary files for public distributions.

Update attribute data files to reflect changes to ag districts, in conjunction with boundary modifications.

Contribute to design of PDF maps and other output image data files to meet the needs of the NYS Ag Districts Mapping Program.

Produce and present graphic presentations for instructional and educational purposes.

Map - Database Management, Data Distribution and Archiving:

Maintain digital spatial data for sponsor and public distribution and program archiving, using specialized computer graphic and spreadsheet programs.

Produce reports to CALS and NYS AGM documenting updated county Ag Districts digital files.

Maintain a digital archive of previous and current Ag Districts GIS boundary files, PDF maps, KMZ Google Earth files and other record keeping related to published data.

Research archives for previous versions of Ag Districts boundary files to fulfill requests from county and state program participants, Cornell faculty and staff, environmental consultants and private landowners.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or other formal training program of four years or equivalent.

GIS software proficiency, especially exporting map layouts and conversion to other file formats.

Able to use ESRI Arc Pro to edit boundaries to conform with updated Ag District maps.

Understanding of various graphic output file formats such as PNG, JPG, TIF and PDF.

Ability to coordinate with NYS and County program participants for modification and distribution of data.

Must be able to work independently, as well as in a team environment. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the utmost discretion and integrity.

Preferred Qualifications:

Good cartographic and graphic design understanding.

Strong organizational skills for file management and archiving of all digital NYS Ag Districts filetypes.

Working Conditions:

Essential Physical Requirements: Typically lifts up to 20 lbs.

Visual: Close concentration/manual dexterity.

Able to change inks and rolled paper on wide-format printer.

Clean scanning surface and rollers on wide-format scanner and flat-bed scanners.

Hazards: no use of hazardous materials.

This sponsored position is a 32-hours per week, two-month position through March 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension up to six months depending on available funding and performance.

This position excludes a remote work option as in-person activities are required to accomplish most products and services.

Pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.10 per hour. Work shift can be flexible with the expectation to occur during business hours Monday – Friday.

This position is not benefits eligible.
