Research areas for the ideal candidate may include, but are not limited to, genetics, epigenetics, disease (especially vector borne disease), forensic DNA /genomics or evolutionary genetics. Candidates who focus on creating new genetic modeling systems (animal or insect), especially transgenic organisms and protein fusions for live imaging and have experience in building and/or working with custom microscopy setups are especially welcome to apply and would benefit from our growing imaging capacities and contribute in expanding it. Applicants should provide evidence of a track record and strong potential for significant productivity in interdisciplinary research. Externally funded research and upper-level course teaching experience are both considered a plus. Successful candidates will be expected to develop an independent research program and actively collaborate in research and grantsmanship with members in the School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences ( SIBCS ) as well as other faculty at UTRGV and outside the University for impacting the RGV & beyond. The successful candidate will contribute to the Master’s programs in the SIBCS (e.g., BCMB , Biology), to the developing SIBCS Integrative Life Sciences PhD program, and to the Vector Biology Certificate program. Faculty are expected to involve both undergraduate and graduate students in research activities and should have a strong commitment to educate a diverse body of students in a Hispanic-serving institution.
Opportunities for collaboration include the UTRGV Center for Vector Borne Disease, a multi-disciplinary, multi-departmental UTRGV institute focused on studies of vector-borne diseases, including human, animal, and plant pathogens; and the Forensic Anthropology Research Laboratory, which engages in research and supports undergraduate academic and research experiences in forensic anthropology, forensic science, and biological anthropology.

Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. for the Assistant Professor position, or current Assistant/Associate Professor appointment for the Associate Professor position in one of the following areas: Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field with demonstrated strong potential for research productivity and extramural funding.

Applicants with postdoc research experience and those with experience teaching upper-level or graduate-level courses in biology, biochemistry, or molecular biology are encouraged to apply. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
