Working Conditions

Mt Leyshon is a legacy site with a number of environmental challenges that require diligent monitoring and management to ensure that the site stays within legal compliance. Land and rehabilitation activities are focussing on improving overall environmental performance through continuous improvement and innovation.    The site is remote and the successful incumbent will need to be self-motivated and be able to work in isolation. 

The position is based at Mt Leyshon, 24km from Charter’s Towers, Queensland.

You will be expected to reside in Charters Towers.

The role is very diverse in that you can be interacting with regulators and technical specialists the one day, pastoralist the next and assist with hands-on surface water monitoring or pump repairs the following day.  

Regular out of hours work will be required, especially during the wet summer months.

Purpose

As a member of the Newmont S&ER team, you will work to ensure that closure and reclamation work is carried out in line with Newmont’s standards and regulatory expectations to minimise environmental, social and financial liability impacts, identify risks and opportunities and ensure leading closure practices.

A key role of this position is to take responsibility for environmental monitoring in accordance with the site Environmental Authority and assist in improving the site environmental performance.

In addition you will assist the S&ER Department in raising the profile of environmental issues across site; embedding a culture of environmental improvement and awareness both on the mine and surrounding properties.

Essential Duties

Ensure monitoring activities are conducted in accordance with the site Environmental Authority and as per the site monitoring schedule and procedures. Assist in the coordination, development and implementation of the following environmental programs: Weed Management Feral Animal Control Fire management & Control Recycling and Waste Management Sediment and soil monitoring Rehabilitation monitoring (vegetation, erosion etc.) Water Sampling (EA Compliance)    Surface and groundwater sampling Maintenance and calibration of surface and groundwater monitoring equipment Maintenance and upkeep of site lab facility and inventory control of consumables Preparation and dispatching of water samples to off-site service providers Establish and maintain relationships with relevant external stakeholders Operation of site plant (skid steer and CAT Integrated Tool Carrier) Maintenance and upkeep of site plant and miscellaneous equipment Fence repairs and maintenance Assist with maintenance/repairs of site equipment

Skills & Experience

Mine site environmental monitoring experience – typically 5+ years or equivalent High school education – Year 10 (with trade) or 12 Light vehicle licence (Manual) Sound computer skills including intermediate Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook Good written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated mechanical aptitude A Senior First Aid certificate will be advantageous
