Job Summary:

Therapeutic Specialists provide supervision and therapeutic support to youth in a psychiatric residential treatment facility. The Therapeutic Specialist utilizes professional experience and training to meet the overall social and emotional needs of the young people in treatment in order to increase hope, motivation and resilience-based outcomes through purposeful, structured activities, interactions and experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Functions in accordance with the system’s Operational Guidelines and within their professional code of ethics.

Provides guidance, utilizing their experience and ability to meet the needs of the client and the goals of treatment, and engages in any other activities that meet those needs and goals.

Participates in and contributes to staff development activities to include 40 annual training hours.       

Is sensitive and responsible to management needs, such as data collection, program evaluation, development of grant applications, maintenance of various contracts for services, etc.

Participates in all required meetings to include biweekly staff meetings.

Is responsive to all Quality Assurance procedures of the system, cooperates with utilization review procedures, and follows established procedures, rules and regulations of the Clinical Records Department.

Performs other special functions as may, from time to time, be outlined and attached hereto.

Provides general supervision of all residents, maintaining ratio at all times.

Implements policies, treatment plans and house rules accurately and consistently under the supervision and guidance of the Youth Residential Supervisor.

Responsible for working with a team of residents on their daily program, specific interventions and adjustments to the milieu, including homework, chores, recreation, social skills, daily living skills, individualized weekly and treatment plan goals. This includes:

Facilitates and engages with your resident team during group milieu activities, providing intervention as needed for resident members to obtain maximum benefit from the activity.

Actively engage and assist in the provision of reimbursements to residents based on individual and group profiles from the YVAPP (Youth Voice & Perspective Profile) and other sources of information.

Facilitates house meetings with assigned team, sharing feedback and communicating positive expectations.

Facilitates one specialized group (social skills, relaxation, recreation, craft, life skill, etc.) each week, as requested.

Intercedes on behalf of individual client within the community at large to assist the client in achieving and maintaining community adjustment.

Coordinates with Youth Residential Supervisor and Targeted Case Manager to see that resident needs are addressed (clothing, supplies, correspondence, etc.).

Dispenses medications to residents (per physician’s orders) as requested and training permits.

Implements critical intervention plans including safety plans and precautions on clients when deemed clinically necessary.

Provides security for residents and crisis management services to youth and staff (CPI). 

Monitors and charts resident activity and treatment progress daily (i.e., shift notes, logs, incident reports, behavior tracking, treatment plans, etc.), completing all required documentation in a timely manner as per licensure and departmental guidelines.

Demonstrates ability to appropriately model program coping, communication, and social skills.

Participates in regular supervision with Youth Residential Supervisor and is receptive to supervision and feedback.

Clinical needs of the program and youth served take precedence over the employees preferred days and times to work and as such, employee may be required to work varying shifts as needed.

Experience and/or Education Qualifications:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in social work, counseling, human services, human development, psychology, or closely related field; OR Master’s degree in education or related field.

Must be 21 years of age or older.

Experience with children/adolescents is preferred.

Must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Chauffeurs license (Class E).

Shall successfully complete CPR, First Aid Level One Medication Aide Training, and CPI training.
