Your role and responsibilities

Are you passionate about renewable energy, cutting-edge technologies, and innovative solutions for a sustainable future? ABB is seeking a highly motivated master’s student to collaborate on an exciting thesis project aimed at designing the next generation of data centers powered entirely by renewable energy.Your research will focus on:1. System Design: Developing a conceptual design for a data center powered by 100% renewable energy, incorporating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), renewable sources, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).2. Investor Perspective: Identifying key metrics and considerations for evaluating investment opportunities in renewable-powered data centers, focusing on scalability, sustainability, profitability, and risk.3. Stakeholder Insights: Providing actionable recommendations for operators, developers, and investors, addressing project feasibility, profitability, and optimal implementation scenarios. What You'll Do:• Analyze Renewable Energy Microgrid Design: Research and define the optimal configuration for an “ideal” microgrid that powers the average data center, integrating a renewable energy mix. This will involve conducting a comprehensive literature review and/or engaging in interviews with experts in the field.• Evaluate the Business Case for Bankability: Assess the trade-offs between building baseload capacity using Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and utilizing renewable power sources such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind turbines, and ground source heat pumps. Develop criteria for creating a financially viable and scalable business case.• Explore Revenue Opportunities with BESS: Investigate innovative revenue streams enabled by Battery Energy Storage Systems, including energy arbitrage, demand response participation, and auxiliary services. Analyze how these streams can enhance the profitability and reliability of the data center by balancing SMRs and weather-dependent power sources.• Deliver a Comprehensive Thesis: Synthesize your findings into actionable insights and recommendations, contributing to sustainable innovation in the data center industry.Details:• Period: February to June 2025• Number of credits: 30 ECTS• Number of students for this thesis work: 1 • Location: Flexible (Remote/Hybrid) with possible collaboration at ABB facilities
