Thin Film Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

We are looking for a bright, hands-on thin film engineer to join our fast-paced engineering team and play a key role in the development of state-of-the-art, high-performance optical coatings for Coherent’s next generation laser products. Develop and optimize optical thin film coatings for UV, VIS and NIR  Develop coating processes for magnetron, IBS, and e-beam coating technologies Recipe development & Parameter optimization Tooling specification & design Test & Inspection Requirements Operate and maintain thin film deposition equipment, including sputtering systems, evaporators, and other related machinery. Monitor and analyze coating quality through testing and characterization methods such as spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Prepare and maintain detailed documentation of processes, procedures, and experimental results. Approximately 75% of work time is located in clean room environment - fully gowned Initial remote site training may require 30% U.S. travel during first year of employment

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline 5+ years of experience in optical thin films coatings preferred In-depth knowledge of thin film deposition techniques (PVD, CVD), coating materials, and characterization methods Non-linear optics and birefringent materials experience a plus Essential Macleod and/or OptiLayer coating design (SolidWorks a bonus) Strong experimental and analytical skills paired with sound engineering judgment. Must be self-driven and have demonstrated ability to meet deadlines. Must be able to perform in a distributed, diverse cross-functional team environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction
