Throughput Specialist - Bed Placement

Summary:
The Throughput Specialist is responsible for improving hospital throughput and patient outcomes. This role collaborates with providers, nursing leaders, and administrative coordinators to ensure appropriate patient flow and bed planning with a focus on increasing bed utilization and reducing patient/bed turnaround delays with a decrease in length of stay and increase in discharges prior to noon. The Specialist will work collaboratively with the healthcare team to remove/reduce barriers to safe discharge with a focus on quality and patient safety.
Responsibilities:
+ Monitor patient flow and patient throughput in coordination with interdisciplinary teams. Facilitate efficient and timely flow of patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
+ Facilitate daily interdisciplinary discharge huddles (IDR) on the inpatient units.
+ Utilize excellent clinical, communication, and team-building skills to address and escalate throughput issues to leadership, physicians, and teammates to help facilitate timely flow of patient discharges, transfers, and admissions.
+ Collaborate with healthcare team to assure patient is in the right level of care.
+ Obtain referrals or consults from physicians and other clinicians to assess, evaluate, and expedite throughput issues.
+ Coordinate with care teams, CMO, CNO, COO and Performance Improvement to reduce length of stay and improve outcomes across various departments (Inpatient, ED, Surgical and procedural, Imaging, Diagnostics, etc.).
+ Collaborate with healthcare team to assure patient is in the right level of care.
+ Obtain referrals or consults from physicians and other clinicians to assess, evaluate, and expedite throughput issues.
+ Coordinate with care teams, CMO, CNO, COO and Performance Improvement to reduce length of stay and improve outcomes across various departments (Inpatient, ED, Surgical and procedural, Imaging, Diagnostics, etc.).
+ Implement initiatives to remove barriers to discharge and improve discharge times, ensuring timely and efficient patient transitions.
+ Identify performance opportunities and implement strategies to achieve Throughput Committee and organizational and system goals and targets related to patient flow and throughput.
+ Monitor daily for patients medically ready for discharge and coordinate with teammates to expedite discharges.
+ Use bed tracking technology, rounding, and communications with ACs/staff to maintain an understanding of house-wide bed supply and demand.
+ Partner with teammates to pull patients from admission portals to inpatient floors and reduce wait times for inpatient beds.
+ Collaborate with teammates to pull patients to the discharge lounge where appropriate.
+ Participate in improvement projects sponsored by the entity throughput leadership committee as an active team member to achieve deliverables.
+ Collect and analyze data to identify patterns, trends, or opportunities for improvement.
+ Engage in continuing education and professional development activities.
+ Coordinate Throughput Committee activities and initiatives to address challenges and continuous improvement in patient throughput and length of stay. Assist with coordination of subcommittee meetings and materials as requested.
+ Attend Hospital Throughput Committee and assist with coordination of meeting agenda and materials, as well as assist with subcommittee agendas and materials as requested
+ Ensure that patient throughput initiatives prioritize quality of care and patient safety, while also enhancing patient experience.
+ identify trends, monitor performance, and track progress towards goals. Utilizes data to drive decisions and change, as well as identify opportunities for improvement related to flow and throughput.
+ Generate reports, presentations, data analytics to communicate key performance metrics and outcomes related to patient throughput and flow.
+ Provide support to teammates to help drive initiatives and achieve metrics.

**Education Requirements:**
● Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
**Licensure/Certification Requirements:**
● Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state of North Carolina
**Professional Experience Requirements:**
● Three (3) years of inpatient care and operations experience required. Experience with Epic required.
**Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:**
● Detail-oriented with the ability to analyze data and trends, as well as research and best practices.
● Highly organized professional with astute clinical understanding
● Great attention to detail and critical thinking skills
● Compliance with regulatory and departmental guidelines and policies
● Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities throughout the day
● Teaching, coaching and presentation skills. Advanced/expert verbal, written, and computer skills. Ability to inspire, motivate, and provide leadership to clinical teammates at all levels
