Purpose
Contributes to the overall success of the Investment Management Business, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.
What You’ll Do
Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
Assists the Senior Manager, Compliance within Scotiabank’s Asset Management division in carrying out day-to-day compliance functions and the development, drafting, updating and administration of compliance policies, procedures and reference materials, systems and manual processes.
Escalates matters that are complex in nature and in which further guidance is required or falls outside existing policies to the Senior Manager. Critical matters are immediately escalated to the Director, Investment Management Compliance.
Support the Compliance Team with day-to-day compliance functions and the development, evaluation, updating and administration of Compliance policies, training and reference materials, bulletins, systems, and manual processes for the Scotiabank Asset Management / Investment Management businesses, including 1832 US.
Ensure that compliance review procedures and monitoring, including monthly Account Manifold reviews, are conducted in a high quality, risk-based manner, and appropriate follow-up actions are taken. Other monitoring activities include monthly portfolio manager and account reconciliation, including reviewing states in which we are notice filed with the SEC.
Assist with the setup of new monitoring procedures, including for Form N-PX proxy monitoring.
Assist in identifying efficiencies and areas for improvement within the existing compliance program, testing of processes and controls and developing, maintaining and implementing changes to the firm’s compliance policies and procedures.
Assist with inquiries from Internal Audit and Compliance Testing.
Serve as a compliance resource and respond to compliance queries from Asset Management / Investment Management businesses.
Assist in reviewing new rules, interpretations, regulatory notices, and enforcement actions for impact to businesses. Periodically conduct or assist in conducting gap analyses to help enhance the compliance program.
Participate in the training and education of staff as it relates to regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures.
Work with the business to provide constructive input with regards to new initiatives such as product launches from a compliance perspective.
Assist with special compliance projects as required.
Assist with quarterly and annual risk assessment process, including determining applicable risks, cataloging existing controls, and determining inherent and residual risk ratings.
Assist with the Volcker Compliance program, including quarterly and yearly refreshes and reviews of legal entity attestations and desk operating procedures.
Help prepare materials in response to regulatory inquiries, examinations, and investigations, in addition to other standard regulatory filings.
Assist with the regular review of client facing documentation, such as new account documents and investor guides.
Maintain records of proof of completion of regulatory mailings, training, etc., for audit purposes.
Assist in identifying gaps in the existing compliance program and participate in developing, maintaining, and implementing changes to the firm's compliance practices, policies and procedures.
Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

What You’ll Bring
5 years financial services compliance experience, preferably in a similar role. Previous investment adviser / asset management experience a plus. Knowledge and understanding of financial advisory services, policies, procedures, and compliance processes. Familiarity with applicable regulations applicable to foreign banks conducting investment management in the US a plus. Capable of simultaneously handling multiple tasks and meeting stringent deadlines. Ability to organize and prioritize in a fast-paced environment with attention to accuracy and detail. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to think strategically about the compliance function; has maintained relevant knowledge with proven success in responding to changing regulatory environment and business needs Strategic, clear and confident communicator.
