Professional work responsibilities include providing basic safety and interpretive services in the galleries throughout the museum. The incumbent may also serve as initial point of contact for all visitors and groups to the Louisiana State Museum, maintain knowledge of and fluency for all LSM programs and exhibits, Adapt to changes in schedules and job requirements. Assist the programming and education staff to implement educational programs, school tours and special events as efficiently as possible. EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION: Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED. Welcomes tourists; determines their travel interests and needs. Provides information on localities, museums, parks, events and other attractions to visit. Assists travelers with hotel reservations and weather reports from the Internet. Answers questions from visitors, by phone and mail, regarding the state, its history and its culture. Conducts research by reading industry publications, visiting travel websites and consulting with others to keep abreast of upcoming events and to broaden knowledge of the state. Participates in educational study tours. Keeps daily records or files; stocks brochure racks; orders supplies/brochures; performs other clerical duties. Attains CPR certification and becomes re-certified annually. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 40% + Monitor galleries internally to assure safety of museum artifacts, building, and guests. Monitor and alert designated museum administrator in the event of crisis or disturbance, monitor and maintain the flow of visitors. Ensures that all museum rules followed. Assist visitors with questions + Provides information to LSM guests on LSM programming, properties and other regional attractions. Distributes brochures, ntaps, and other LSM printed material. Answer visitor's questions pertaining to museum exhibits, the state, history and culture. Refers museum guests interested in additional LSM information to the appropriate museum personnel. 30% + Use computer based Point of Sale ticketing system and group reservations database. Receive cash, checks, and other forms of payments for museum admission. Explain museum discount programs. Verifies total sales and balance the cash drawer at the end of the day. Documents and explains any overages or shortages. Maintain working knowledge to operate various office machines such as copiers, calculators, and credit-card machines. 15% + Upon completion of proper training, may assist curatorial staff with cleaning of exhibits and artifacts on display. 10% + May assist with museum programming, tours and events in visitor services or building monitoring capacity. 5% Performs other duties as required.
