The Metropolitan Council’s Metro Transit Divisionis one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides ridership through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as a resource for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.
TheTrack Laborercleans and maintains Metro Transit Light Rail Track system, right-of-way and structures including the embedded, ballasted and direct fixation track, special track work, turnouts and associated equipment and structures. Also performs tasks associated with preventive and corrective maintenance, right-of-way cleaning, and maintaining railroad crossings of the track system and assists skilled personnel in Rail Systems Maintenance performing their duties.
What you would do in this job
+ Cleans up and removes trash, dirt and debris on right-of-way.
+ Assists with repair and replacement of concrete or timber ties, hand digging of ballast, ballast dressing and rail fastener repairs.
+ Operates sweepers, pressure washers, small tools, rail drill, rail saw, gas powered wrench, rail profile grinder, pneumatic tamper, hydraulic tamper, pneumatic jackhammer and other rail systems maintenance tools.
+ Performs track vegetation control duties such as weed mowing, spraying, and removal.
+ Performs snow removal from track including operating snow removal equipment (self- propelled and handheld removal equipment) and assists other agencies with snow removal as required.
+ Attends and participates in Rail Safety and Training meetings.
+ Assists in emergency situations as needed.
+ Operates hi-rail vehicles, small cranes used in track maintenance.
+ Performs related work as apparent or assigned.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
Education/Experience:
+ High school diploma or GED.
Licensure Requirement:
+ Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
+ Ability to obtain a Class A CDL Driver's License and ability to meet ongoing DOT physical requirements.
+ Ability to pass physical examinations, Rail Operations Rule Book and physical agility examinations and successfully complete Rail Operator Training Program for Maintenance Personnel.

+ Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s).
+ Able to read and comprehend regulations and instructions as well as possess good verbal communication skills.
+ Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience).
+ Experience operating heavy equipment such as construction, farm, etc. (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience).
+ Experience working in a construction-type setting (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience).
What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
+ Ability to operate the district's radio and telephone communication system in compliance with regulations and procedures.
+ Demonstrated mechanical skills including ability to properly use hand and power tools.
+ Must meet ongoing educational and training requirements and may be required to maintain OTE Certification and complete basic and advanced principal classes of track maintenance certification.
+ Ability to communicate in English.
+ Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions.
+ Ability to write basic correspondence.
+ Ability to effectively work with diverse groups of customers or clients.
+ Requires tact, courtesy and cooperation in dealings with others where the primary purpose is the exchange of information.
+ Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide two-digit numbers. Ability to perform these operations with money, weight measurement, volume and distance.
+ Ability to add and subtract fractions.
+ Ability to determine diameter and radius of circles.
+ Ability to accurately use a tape measure.

Physical Requirements:
Incumbent must perform heavy manual labor, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with the assistance of applicable equipment or other employees. Ability to meet color and peripheral vision requirements. Must be able to work from heights with the assistance of proper safety equipment and ability to work in all outdoor weather conditions Regularly required to stand and walk and reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel, for long periods, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl.

If you arenew to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
