Position Summary:
This is a Trader role within the larger Power & Natural Gas Team. The employee will be will be tasked with sourcing competitively priced power/natural gas to MPC’s assets using arbitrage strategies, hedging techniques, and identifying discretionary trading opportunities within MPC’s established risk policy. Knowledge of physical gas flow and markets will be critical to the success of this position. This position will report to the Supply & Trading Director.
Key Responsibilities
Develops and implements natural gas supply sourcing strategies for area(s) of geographic responsibility.
Manages souring and trading activity to given performance metrics that plays an integral role in the team P&L responsibility
Identify ,and execute upon, arbitrage opportunities using storage, pipeline capacity, and physical or financial trading tools
Continuously reviews market conditions and the short-term supply and sales plans; articulates, recommends, and implements changes to optimize overall value to MPC
Recommends, initiates, negotiations, (and in some cases) executes the purchase, exchange, and sale contracts that maximize economic benefits to the company
Builds and maintains internal and external relationships with counterparties and business partners
Prepares periodic market reports that articulate supply/demand, competitive developments, and supports Point of View (POV)
Collaborates with the value chain and various members of the extended business team (Credit, Legal, Accounting, etc.) to stay abreast of trading, logistical and financial activity, meet regulatory requirements, prepare contracts, address information queries, and develop acquisition/sales strategies to achieve optimum value.
Participates in the negotiation or development of commercial resolutions impacting trading desk (e.g., disputes, claims, etc.).
Manages basis commodity exposure and/or physical inventory position to maximize market structure value within operational constraints in collaboration with Refining, Scheduling, and Finance groups within assigned area.
Optimizes transportation and storage asset utilization, while managing costs and maximizing economic benefit in collaboration with key stakeholders with a focus on short term.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required
Three (3) or more years of experience in Trading or Marketing including profit/loss responsibility for Product Trading, Contract Negotiation and Scheduling (rail, truck, vessel and pipe)
