Duties Description Trades specialist is responsible for all electrical work including planning and laying out work and diagnosis of trouble systems or equipment in an assigned area on an assigned project for the entire facility. Electricians frequently supervise others in the work including semiskilled and unskilled workers in an agency such as the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision where incarcerated individuals perform some electric repair or installation tasks. A trades specialist electrician may be responsible for the work of a small group of such individuals. You would repair, maintain, and install electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, wiring, switches, controls and related equipment, and small appliances including radio, TV and record players.
Minimum Qualifications Non Competitive: Successful completion of a NYS two-year trades specialist (electrician) traineeship or NYS two-year electrician training program, or successful completion of any equivalent electrical two-year training, or apprenticeship program OR four years of full-time experience in electrical trade under a skilled journey level electrician, which would provide training in the electrical trade or training equivalent to that given by an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in the electric trade or training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade school as a school, institute, or branch of armed services may be substituted on a year for year basis. Trades Specialist Trainee 1 Minimum Qualifications: Full-time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below which is primarily engaged in the performance of unskilled and/or semiskilled labor and trades tasks; must be 18 years of age or older; possess a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; and be proficient in English and math.Trades Specialist Trainee 2 Minimum Qualifications: Successful completion of a 52-week probationary period as a Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1; OR completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework and 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework or passage of an equivalency exam or proof of successful completion of equivalent training, 144 hours of electrician trade specific instruction, and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training. Trainees must maintain a āCā or better average in their coursework.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New YorkState driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
