Traffic Systems Dispatcher/Operator and Data Collection is responsible for Traffic Operations situational awareness, data entry and monitoring a designated region, district and roadway for normal and emergency conditions to identify incidents, coordinate response and update status for DOT and Consultant management in a 24/7/365 environment, using various software, CCTV and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

 

Responsibilities:

Gathering situational awareness on a State DOT road network in the Traffic Management Center (TMC)Monitoring traffic cameras installed along the road network. and declaring and responding to traffic incidents in a timely manner. Monitor the roadways and detect traffic incidents including abnormal traffic congestion on the DOT road network, employing CCTV cameras. congestion information from state and commercial sources. crowdsourcing application s (e.g. Google Traffic and Waze), and through close working relationships with operating partners (e.g. Police, DOT etc.)Dispatching DOT staff and contracted crew for routine and emergency road traffic maintenance activities, such as. pothole repair. traffic sign/ pavement marking maintenance. electrical traffic control device maintenance, salting and snow removal. Pro-actively monitor the DOT's road network and review road closures. To notify relevant DOT staff of any unauthorized road closures detected or notified by internal/external agenciesPro-actively monitor field equipment. dashboards and software /hardware used in the TMC and report any deficiencies to appropriate DOT maintenance staffUtilize TMC equipment and TMC software to actively monitor trafficDeploy signing plans on the DOT's VMS and DMSMonitor the real-time operation of CCTV cameras. electronic variable message signs. vehicle detection systems, incident reporting systems. active traffic management controls and other systems as they are brought on-line over the course of the Agreement:Monitor the operation of the DOT’s traveler information channels to ensure that information is communicated in a timely manner, that it is accurate, and that it is useful for the intended target audienceMonitor other DOT public service platforms to verify the accuracy of traveler information (e.g. road restriction map, Queue-End Warning System and social media). and report deficiencies to the DOT (e.g. presentation of inaccurate information)Proactively monitor "hotspots", smart work zones, any changes in road/lane alignments and locations as identified by the DOT using the CCTV cameras and other sources: On-going. routine and emergency communications with a variety of operational stakeholders, including (but not limited to) Road Operations, Traffic Planning/Right of Way Management, Engineering & Construction Services and others, as necessary to ensure a comprehensive view of road conditions within the DOT. This will involve frequent scheduled and proactive communications via telephone. email, social media, and other channel, as deemed relevant by the DOT.

Education Requirements

Associates Degree or higher is required.

Training, Skills, Knowledge and/or experience 

Experience in a public safety, emergency management, transportation dispatch or similar environmentSkills in interpersonal relationships and ability to work well within a diverse group.Ability to clearly communicate written and verbal information in English.Ability to clearly communicate information over a radio system or network.Ability to use freeway management and other traffic control computer  applications.Ability to write reports, and correspondence.Ability to coordinate real time activities and prioritiesAbility to take calls, dispatch on a radio or telephone and otherwise communicate in a clear and concise manner.Capable of multitasking and working in a fast paced environmentFamiliarity with Regional DOT Interstates and local roadways Ability to use computers in “Windows-based applications.” Ability to work alternate work schedules and be on-call as necessary
