Training Engineer II (Maintenance and Ground Operations)

This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will be responsible for training the teams responsible for preparing and maintaining the reusable New Shepard launch vehicle and operating/maintaining the New Shepard launch site infrastructure and ground equipment. In this role, you will define training requirements and strategy, plan and implement the training to meet requirements, and evaluate proficiency and currency. You will also support development for future training infrastructure, such as mock launch vehicle hardware and simulation software. The training program is critical to ensuring consistent, repeatable, and reliable crew operations.

This position is located in Van Horn, TX. Being at the heart of Blue Origin operations, the West Texas Site in Van Horn, TX offers eligible employee’s additional attractive financial incentives to supplement their competitive base earnings, including a living allowance and relocation assistance.  Eligibility for these additional benefits is based on the employee’s ability to permanently relocate to Van Horn, TX, or travel to Van Horn from another Blue location a minimum of 50% of the time.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Define, develop, and conduct on-the-job training, hands-on training with mockups, simulations, and classroom training.  

Develop specialty courses of instruction for identified needs, working with a wide variety of individuals while researching courses.  

Develop maintenance manuals and other technical documents to support training and operations.  

Evaluate crew proficiency and currency for maintenance operations; develop makeup training and other training mitigation plans as needed.  

Maintain accurate, auditable records of crew training completion. 

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of a B.S in engineering, or equivalent.  

3 years of experience in defining, developing, validating, and implementing technical training for engineers and technicians working in a high technology, safety critical operational environment. 

Experience writing technical training course materials (lesson objective and plans, evaluation criteria, hands-on training activities).  

Experience authoring training plans, maintenance and operations manuals, and other technical documents.  

Engineering and/or operational experience with complex aerospace systems such as hydraulics, avionics, propulsion, cryogenics, life support systems, or high-pressure pneumatics.  

Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn flight hardware/scripting procedures and associated tools, including the ability to rapidly learn and apply new software tools as required.  

Ability to travel to the Kent, WA as needed.  

Self-starter with strong coordination and project management skills. Must be able to initiate, track, manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks and jobs.  

A proven track record of working successfully with a diverse multi-disciplinary team and building strong working relationships within the organization and across multiple groups.  

Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

5+ years of experience. 

Experience with Articulate Storyline.  

Previous experience as a Maintenance or Test Engineer in aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, nuclear energy, or a similar high-tech, safety critical environment.  

Hands-on experience with hazardous testing with a strong safety record.  

Experience designing, building, and integrating electronic test equipment.
