Transportation Assistant

Responsibilities Incumbent will serve as a Transportation Assistant in the Transportation Office, performing Freight shipment and transportation support functions. Serves as point of contact between local packing and shipping functions, freight forwarders and carriers. Research transportation systems and other available resources to provide shipping information. Receives inquiries from customers worldwide regarding status of shipments, and/or incomplete shipments. Research, resolve, recommend, make determinations, and corrective actions. Maintains accountability records on all GBLs received and issued. Consult various regulatory guides pertaining to the report of survey, stock fund, and accounting for lost and damage property. Review and analyze shipping data, delivery of receipts, statements, and or other documents reflecting discrepancies, loss and damage incidents to shipments. Makes recommendations as to liability or non-liability of carrier or shipper. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for a Transportation Assistant your resume and supporting documentation must support: 1.Knowledge of governing documentation for domestic and/or foreign freight shipments in order to plan and arrange for shipments within established time frames. 2.Knowledge of special handling procedures for shipping commodities that have special characteristics such as those requiring refrigerated storage, signature service, special packing etc., to assure special handling requirements are met for air, water, land, and air. 3. Knowledge of the carrier industry, routing processes, specialized shipment needs and special handling requirements Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
