TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANT (PERSONAL PROPERTY)
Summary You will serve as a Transportation Assistant (Personal Property) in the Personal Property Branch, Distribution Management Office of the MARINE CORPS BASE. Responsibilities You will review applicants' orders to determine if the applicant is entitled to shipment and/or storage of personal property at Government expense. You will recommend a course of action consistent with existing regulations and in the best interest of the Government and the owner. You will monitor shipment reports for personal property applications for permanent change of station orders, retirements, or separation of service members, their dependents, and civilian employees. You will review and interpret new or revised transportation directives and issues regulatory guidance to military members, their dependents, and civilian employees. You will communicate with destination Transportation Office and/or Personal Property Shipping Offices in order to explain findings, and contact customers with status of personal property or explains reason(s) for problems and/or errors. You will determine methods of shipment, estimate the weight of property to be shipped, obtain data on any unusual items requiring special packing, and consignee information. You will be responsible for assigning shipment applications to Personal Property Counselors for review and processing. You will counsel members on all factors involved in shipment and/or placing property into non-temporary storage, weight allowance and weight restrictions, possible excess costs. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector 1) Determining methods of shipment, estimating weight to determine specific handling, packing, loading or type of carrier equipment required; 2) Reviewing and interpreting new or revised transportation directives and issuing regulatory guidance to customers; 3) Counseling customers on their entitlements, and all aspects for shipment and/or storage of their personal property; 4) Assigning shipment applications to Personal Property Counselors for review and processing; and 5) Computing shipment costs, excess costs and verifying that charges are valid.
