Transportation Design Intern

In Eastern PA, we have an exceptional team working diligently on improving a variety of infrastructure and resiliency projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and JMT’s vast footprint. This team is looking for a driven, nimble, resourceful, and adaptive intern who is looking to learn and grow in the industry.

Position summary: The intern will work directly under the supervision of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or licensed Professional Engineer (PE) within JMT’s talented, multi-disciplinary team of leaders to complete an array of transportation related design tasks. The intern will have the opportunity to work within one of the following discipline groups:

Highways Water Resources Structures Water/Wastewater Aviation 

The ideal candidate will have an interest in pursuing a career in transportation engineering, which may include highways, water resources, structures, water/wastewater, and aviation. The ideal candidate will also have an interest in learning the basics of transportation engineering design tasks, understanding how a transportation project is delivered, using technological software to solve engineering problems and prepare engineering drawings, and assisting other disciplines outside of their assigned discipline group on an “as needed” basis. 

This position is being offered in conjunction with ACEC/PA’s TQI Shared Intern Program. ACEC (American Council of Engineering Companies) is a professional organization which promotes the improving infrastructure that drives quality of life and economic growth. As a part of this program, the candidate would have the unique opportunity to learn from leaders inside and outside of JMT, including some of our main clients, such as PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), in addition to other consulting engineering firm partnered through ACEC/PA. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Make edits and updates to engineering drawings using AutoCAD/Civil3D and/or Microstation/OpenRoads Designer Review design manuals and specifications Perform engineering back-up computations and quantity takeoffs Develop and prepare specifications Assist in technical report writing and documentation Coordinate new small-scale projects Assemble data and research Assist with administrative duties Provide input on solutions to problems using basic theories and engineering fundamentals Assist with layout and design of routine small and medium-sized engineering projects Evaluate existing conditions through field visit and/or desktop review Maintain accurate and current project documentation Perform all work consistent with JMT’s quality management procedures. Attend scheduled organized events outside of JMT offices through the TQI Shared Intern program
