General Summary:

Bus Instructors will be required to train, coach, and instruct new and experienced bus operators in the proper operation of buses and equipment, as well as assist in the planning, organizing, and teaching of a variety of training programs. Selected candidates will undergo a two-week training process and learn how to be an Instructor. Selected candidates will report directly to the Manager of Bus Training. Selected candidates will not be able to maintain a Bus Operator position, nor will they be able to return to the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists Training Supervisors in providing specialized training on new buses, equipment, routes, and additions/changes as required.Instructs Student Bus Operators in safely operating revenue and non-revenue services, vehicle/equipment operations, routes, ride checks, and customer relations.Trains new students on bus operator procedures and assist or lead in providing classroom instructions.Provides retraining as required.Assist in reviewing and developing training manuals, lesson plans, and related support materials; plan, organize, and implement established programs; and provide input and expertise for the potential revision of programs and training materials.Observe and evaluate each trainee's performance and recommend remedial actions.May be responsible for Department of Public Safety Testing.Maintains accurate records of Bus Operator training forms.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

High school diploma or general education diploma (GED).Three (3) years experience operating 30-40 foot buses and currently working as a Big Bus Operator, including 6 months of behind-the-wheel coaching experience.Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B or A with Passenger Endorsement, no Driving while intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI on driving record, and not more than one (1) conviction of moving violations on driving record within the last twenty-four (24) consecutive months to operate DART revenue vehicles.Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examination prior to hire and periodically as a condition of continued employment. Applicants and employees in these designated safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT/FTA regulations, including DOT pre-employment drug testing and random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.Ability to work unusual hours, split shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime as required, and to be available for work on short notice.Thorough knowledge of operating rules, regulations, procedures, and safety practices applicable to bus operations.Must adhere and remain current with the Bus Instructor Guidelines.Ability to coach, train, and motivate trainees to achieve desired results.Interpersonal skills are needed to effectively and sensitively communicate with customers, all levels of supervisory and non-supervisory employees, and the public; they must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English (Oral and Written).Ability to problem solve, de-escalate, and manage conflicts.Must be proactive, innovative, and creative.Ability to influence trust and feedback; be the model.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Occasional standing and walking on uneven surfaces, lifting/pulling up to an estimated 50lbs of force to pull a lever or align a switch; frequent to continuous pushing and pulling of objects to include interior and exterior panels; occasional bending; occasional to continuous twisting; occasional to continuous reaching at waist and chest levels, at times reaching behind while in seated positions; rare kneeling and or squatting; occasional to continuous climbing into vehicles using steps; minima hand exposure to vibration; variation in frequency in all of the above activities may occur with specified routes.
