ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB’s Charlotte office is looking for an Entry Level Transportation, Environmental or Community Planner to join our growing Planning and Project Development Group. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team, across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope. We are looking for someone who is a collaborative and organized critical thinker and who wants to grow with VHB as they enter their career in urban planning and environmental work.

Responsibilities

Support project-related documentation for a range of transportation planning studies, demographic analyses, and multi-modal / transit-oriented projectsAssist in development of planning level studies including feasibility studies, comprehensive plans, and small area plans to support sustainability, transportation, and resilience planningConduct planning assessments using analytical tools such as GIS to evaluate data, identify trends, and develop documentation to summarize results and recommendationsParticipate in community and stakeholder engagement efforts to support the development of planning studiesPrepare technical presentations and materials to support information meetings (in person and virtual)Track project deliverable progress in multiple systems and coordinate completion across teamsSupport the preparation of EA, CE, EIS, and similar environmental review documentation, which includes preparing quantitative, qualitative, and spatial analyses for the planning-related documentation, including: land use and public policy; community facilities; open space; socioeconomic conditions/ environmental justice and Title VI review; neighborhood conditions; infrastructure; natural resources protection; alternatives analysis Conduct site visits to document site and neighborhood conditionsAssist with project management activities such as coordinating client and agency comments, coordinating activities within teams, and preparing meeting minutes

Skills and Attributes

Excellent written and verbal communication skillsStrong interpersonal skills and time managementExcellent analytical skills, proficiency with qualitative and quantitative research methodsSelf-motivated, fast learner, highly organizedCapable of balancing and performing multiple tasks/projects in a professional environmentMust be able to work independently and as a part of project teams, including the ability to collaborate with a team across a variety of virtual and in-person interaction formatsWorking knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and TeamsStrong knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Familiarity with transportation planning and sustainability principles and resources (a focus on multimodal transportation preferred)Experience with SketchUp and Adobe Suite a plusDesire and willingness to work on a diversity of project types (e.g., transit/transportation, real estate, energy, public agency initiatives, etc.)Passion for urban planning and environmental issues

Qualifications

0-1 year of planning experience, whether through coursework or professional experienceBA in Planning or related area of study relevant to specialization (e.g., Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Geography, Urban Design/Studies, Regional Planning, Sustainability Planning, Economics, Aviation, Civil Engineering, Urban Transportation Planning)Master’s Degree is a plusKnowledge or familiarity with the NEPA environmental review process is a plus
