Position Description
The Transportation Planning Internship is for aspiring transportation planning oriented students looking for an opportunity to gain professional work experience and training in transportation planning. While this internship will provide opportunities to assist in a variety of projects and activities, its key activity will be assisting Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure staff in creating a framework to guide public and private sector delivery of multimodal, transit-supportive infrastructure and land development along high-capacity transit corridors in Nashville and Davidson County. This position will be part of the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure’s (NDOT) transportation safety team and will be working with Vision Zero. Vision Zero is a worldwide strategy to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and severe injuries and at the same time, increasing safety, equity, and mobility for all users. Receives general supervision and reports to various planners within their designated work section.
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.

Typical Duties
+ Assists with collecting data for the Vision Zero report card to assess Nashville’s progress towards Vision Zero goals.
+ Participates in roadway safety audits and fatal crash assessments.
+ Assists with analysis and preliminary system design
+ Conducts basic research and data collection.
+ Assists project team members with various support tasks.
+ Maintains records, collections and files related to specific projects.
+ Assists in the development of graphics, presentation materials and reports.
+ Performs other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Enrollment in accredited undergraduate or graduate program in Urban and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, or similar field of study, with completion of a minimum of 2 years of undergraduate study.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Strong desire to work on projects that deliver quality transit-supportive infrastructure and development patterns
+ Interest in Transportation Demand Management strategies, Vision Zero, and design of high-quality bikeway networks
+ Knowledge of ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) ArcGIS (Aeronautical Reconnaissance Coverage Geographic Information System)
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
