This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Rowan County Maintenance Unit. Work is related to maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Rowan County. Supervise crew of subordinates in the maintenance and construction of highways and other duties assigned. Position will supervise roadway maintenance crew working in and around heavy traffic, heavy equipment and with power tools. Applicant must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently, as needed. Responsibilities include supervision of roadway maintenance crew involved in drainage maintenance, patching, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. Must be able to install and maintain work zone control plans. Complete daily work reports and conduct daily tailgate meetings. Position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as maintenance equipment operation. + Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used. + Experienced in snow and ice operations. + Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices. + Experience in planning work and supervising a crew. Additional Expectations: Work includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needs to complete assigned maintenance tasks. Employee is responsible for making appropriate adjustments to plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, attending training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state and federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie: traffic control and environmental stewardship). The employee must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Safety toe shoes required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
